Job description

RAIGMORE HOSPITAL

CONSULTANT GASTROENTEROLOGIST

10PAs/40 hours per week

£111,430 - £148,064 per annum pro rata

We are inviting applications for a consultant gastroenterologist to join our service. As well as the chance to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, the successful candidate will join a team providing general and subspecialty gastroenterology services to a population of around 250,000, dispersed across an area that includes the highest mountain, deepest loch, furthest northerly and westerly points on the UK mainland and >4,900km of coastline. A luminal interest would particularly complement the existing skillsets within our team to deliver high quality care, drive quality improvement and support training and development.

Our remote and rural geography informs the structure of our service. This post is based in Inverness, using NHS Near Me/ Attend Anywhere virtual conversation (developed with patients in Highland), Teams-based MDT discussion and traditional face-to-face clinical care in a network of rural hospitals to serve our communities. We are part of the North of Scotland Cancer Network, linking Highland, Grampian, Tayside and the Island health boards and take active part in national audits and Scotland-wide initiatives such as the Centre for Sustainable Delivery guideline working groups and National Endoscopy Training Centre.

Our multidisciplinary IBD service includes specialist nurses, a clinical health psychologist, pharmacy, complex dietetic and nutrition support. The liver and viral hepatitis teams provide assessment and management of liver disease including Fibroscanning at locations throughout our region. Our 4-room JAG-accredited endoscopy unit includes facilities for EUS, ERCP and a SMOTS system for delivery of training. We encourage research activity, supported by NHS Highland’s Clinical Research Facility.

Gastroenterology and hepatology inpatient care, outpatient clinics, endoscopy, participation in MDTs and the GI bleed rota are all part of this role. Acute medical take is not expected to be part of this post but may be available for those who wish to do so. Training and supervision of specialist registrars, resident doctors, specialist nurses and medical students is a priority.

Applicants are welcome to visit and we would strongly encourage those that are shortlisted to speak with the informal contacts and other relevant senior colleagues. You can ask for a Teams meeting to be set up through the department contact.
