Job description

Triple West Medical have been appointed by an NHS Trust based in North East England to help recruit a Consultant Cardiologist for a substantive post, but will also consider a Locum Fixed Term Contract for 12 Months minimum. The NHS Trust will consider a Cardiologist with a range of special interests.

The NHS Trust delivers integrated acute and community health services to a population of around 550,000 across multiple sites and is committed to delivering the highest standard of care and treatment to their patients and to consistently improve the overall patient experience.

The service currently provides :
  • ACU and inpatient care. Cardiology specialist care is provided during the working week (Monday to Friday). Cardiologists perform ward rounds on the weekend at the acute sites to review patients on the Acute Cardiac Units, cardiology wards and in the acute medical units.
  • Invasive Coronary angiography
  • Permanent pacing
  • TTE, dobutamine stress echo (including independent nurse and physiologist studies) + TOE including 4d
  • Cardiac MRI including stress studies
  • Cardiac CT
  • Nurse led heart failure clinics at all three sites, supported by a Nurse Consultant
  • Nurse led clinics for chest pain and IHD (post MI or revascularisation)
  • Nurse-led in-patient chest pain assessment service on both acute sites
  • Arrhythmia nurse specialist
  • Physiologist-led follow up of pacemakers and high energy devices
  • Nuclear cardiology
  • A comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation service in both acute hospitals and the community, which now provides for heart failure patients

The new appointee will join the existing cardiologists in providing a robust “front of house” cardiology service. During Monday to Friday, each site has a cardiologist available to cover the Acute Cardiac unit, referrals on the acute admissions unit (AMU) and other wards and provide support to the in-reach nurse-led chest pain service. They also review the on-line referrals through Advice and Guidance and triage the out-patient referrals through the Referral Access System.

Brief Duties :
  • Contribution to acute day-time cardiology at site base, on rotation with the existing cardiologists and trust specialists, covering the acute cardiac unit (8 beds on each site) cardiology step-down beds and cardiology referrals from AMU and other wards / departments. The Acute Cardiac Units on each site have a team of junior doctors to support patient care. Both sites operate a “cardiologist of the day” model who reviews the ACU patients, new admissions and consults. They may be supported on some days by another colleague, depending on the colleague's timetable. Clinics and specialist sessions are not timetabled on the days covering on-call duties.
  • Participation in the weekend ward round rota (currently 6 hrs on each of Saturday and Sunday, 1 weekend in 7). Over time as additional Consultant Cardiologists join the service this will move to covering each site on a Saturday and Sunday. The cardiologist presently spends 1 day of the weekend on each site. They do not travel between the sites on the same day. 0.75 PAs is payable for participation in the rota at the current level. There is no on-call from home.
  • Management of cardiology inpatients.
  • Provision of outpatient clinics.
  • Development and pursuit of specialist interest
  • T&C Apply.

Our Client is happy to issue Certificate of Sponsorships to suitably qualified overseas doctors. GMC registration is essential for this position.
