Job description

Want to learn new skills and help preserve brick and stone structures along the canal? Join us on the South Oxford Canal as part of a team working across our area, from Claydon to Oxford. We will be repointing and bricklaying on structures such as lock chambers and bridges. Join our operations team to gain skills and manpower to maintain grade II listed structures for the community to enjoy and use.

Our Conservators do a fantastic job of ensuring beauty is preserved on our doorstep. This is a great opportunity to make a significant difference in your community while learning more about the canals in your area.

Our Conservator Volunteers help address some of our toughest challenges on the waterways, ensuring that as much of the canal as possible is accessible and well maintained. Each year, we face new challenges managing our increasingly popular space, and your support will help us keep canals vibrant and accessible.

Why we want you

Our Conservator volunteers assist in maintaining our network by conducting heritage and nature conservation activities, as well as everyday tasks like painting or litter picking to improve the local environment.

Some projects involve specific activities such as rebuilding sections of stone wall or planting, allowing volunteers to contribute in different ways according to their interests and availability.

  • Day-to-day maintenance
  • Heritage restoration
  • Graffiti removal
  • Environmental enhancements like hedgelaying
  • Creating new access points with building or improving steps and ramps
  • Declaring any unspent convictions during registration and participating in risk assessments as needed

The skills you need

  • Willingness to learn new skills
  • Ability to travel to remote locations

What's in it for you

  • Spending time outdoors
  • Learning new skills, some with external accreditation
  • Keeping fit
  • Meeting new and friendly people
  • Being part of a supportive team of colleagues and volunteers
  • Seeing improvements to your wellbeing
