Community Maternity Support Worker

An opportunity has arisen for a Community Maternity Support Worker with an existing NVQ 3 (or equivalent) qualification as identified on the person specification to work within a community midwifery team. Although based in Torquay, you will also provide cross cover to the other midwifery teams in the Torbay and South Devon locality.

Your role will encompass supporting the integrated midwifery service with the provision of safe, effective and evidence based care to all women and their families using the maternity services. This will include clinical activities, admin and clerical duties and housekeeping, whilst at all times liaising with the Midwives. The clinical responsibilities involve support of new parents, parent education, feeding support, venepuncture & undertaking new‑born blood spot tests.

Main duties of the job
  • To liaise with other members of multidisciplinary team e.g. Health Visitors, GP's, Children's Centres regarding mothers and babies, respecting confidentiality at all times
  • Assist in the provision of high‑quality care to mothers and babies
  • To undertake tasks and duties for which midwifery training is not required on both mothers and babies and report any deviations from normal parameters to the midwife
  • To carry out additional tasks as delegated by the Registered Midwife once appropriate training has been given (see responsibility)

Job responsibilities
  • As a member of a multi‑professional team contribute to effective communication and its relevance to effective care provision including sensitive information and bereavement support.

An ability to travel efficiently around the Bay is important in order to carry out your duties.

Qualifications and Training
  • Level 3 NVQ/ Apprenticeship or equivalent

Knowledge and experience
  • Ability to act as mentor to MSWs recruited into service
  • Uses appropriate moving and manual handling techniques, as part of daily activities assisting women during postnatal period.
  • Manual dexterity to undertake venepuncture
  • Trained to undertake baseline observations
  • Trained to undertake phlebotomy of mothers and neonatal blood spot
