Job Summary

The Communications Specialist: Brand and Design Management is a crucial role within the Communications and Engagement Team at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP). We are looking for an experienced, talented and passionate designer who is committed to creating accessible communications across all channels, including social media, videos, photography, corporate documents and print materials. The role involves managing projects from brief to completion, advising colleagues on brand guidelines, ensuring accessibility, and proactively supporting campaigns with engaging design solutions.

Main duties of the job
  • Manage the Trust’s brand identity and guidelines, ensuring alignment with national NHS standards and promoting adherence throughout the organisation.
  • Oversee patient information formats, styles and templates with Patient Services, ensuring they meet brand and accessibility guidelines.
  • Populate and manage the Trust’s image library.
  • Produce high‑quality graphics (online and print) and visual materials such as banners, posters and main entrance images.
  • Create publications including the Annual Report.
  • Provide specialist advisory and crisis communication support to staff, directors and senior management.
  • Advise on serious untoward incidents and quality‑assure Freedom of Information responses.
  • Support the team with social media and media management, storytelling using words, visuals and video, and crisis and event management.

Essential – Qualifications
  • Degree level in a relevant subject or equivalent experience demonstrating specialist knowledge.
  • Recognised qualification or demonstrable experience in multi‑media or graphic design.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development (CPD).
Essential – Knowledge and Experience
  • Extensive experience in PR/Communications, particularly in the public sector, with strong knowledge of communications, PR and marketing techniques.
  • Proven track record of high‑quality content creation across video, social media and other channels.
  • Extensive experience in graphic design and brand identity management using software such as Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong social media and analytics experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple projects concurrently.
Essential – Aptitude & Abilities
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication at all levels.
  • Influencing skills with colleagues and key stakeholders, including the media.
Desirable
  • Membership of CIPR, CIM or PRCA.
