Job responsibilities

To be able to lead, coordinate and run colorectal clinics, general surgery clinics and vascular clinics.

To support other specialities within the Outpatients Department.

Knowledge of, or to gain a clearer understanding of the care needs of vascular patients with complex dressings.

To supervise and act as a role model to registered nurses and clinical support workers in running these clinics.

To undertake the role as nursing coordinator in running the areas of different specialities and manage staffing according to clinic cancellations and adding.

Tobe able to work in accordance with the consultants of relevant specialities to meet the needs of the team.

Manage and co-ordinate the department staffing levels daily to ensure effective use of resources across the department. This includes responsibility for the duty rotas, annual and study leave, and bank usage.

You will advise on the level of nursing care and skill-mix for the department, and assist in re-profiling where necessary to improve patient care

To be able to ensure the appropriate management of staff performance, conduct and sickness is in line with Trust Policy and maintain keep staff records up to date.

Ensure that all staff in the area undergo an annual appraisal and have a personal development plan and ensure the provision of support is given to them in achieving these.

You will be involved in ensuring effective use of resources. Ensure that all pressures on the budget are reported appropriately.

Investigate in the event of incidents and/or accidents, taking appropriate corrective actions. Ensure all complaints and incidents are reviewed during monthly 1:1 meetings, with necessary actions implemented accordingly

You will work closely with the Senior Sister to manage the department. In this position you will communicate effectively, listen to staff and ensure their views are heard.

You will also support the Outpatient pathway coordinator by ensuring the day to day clinic checks and note preparations are done effectively in respective areas

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • RN1/RN2/RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality
  • Mentorship / teaching qualification
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Knowledge
  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
  • Knowledge of evidence based practice
  • An understanding of audit and research based nursing practice
  • An understanding of resource management
  • Awareness of clinical governance and risk management issues
Experience
  • To include dealing with distressed relatives, care of terminally ill and other challenging situations
  • Experience of teaching / assessing / supervising others in a clinical setting
  • Proven experience on managing a ward; including management of rotas, managing competencies, resources and staff
Skills
  • Good communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive information
  • Demonstrates ability to influence and negotiate with others
  • Able to assess plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care
  • Able to work as an effective team member
  • Able to supervise and teach junior staff
  • Basic computer skills including ability to use Microsoft Word and Electronic Patient Records
  • Able to prioritise and meet deadlines
