Job description

The successful candidate will work across the Lower GI and Upper GI surgical teams. Together with their colleagues they will be responsible for the day to day management of their team's in-patients, perform the duties of the on‑call general surgical clinical fellow (ST1/2 Level) doctor.

The Department of General Surgery comprises Consultants, Specialty Trainees/Clinical Fellows ranging from ST3 to ST8 level and junior level trainees. Particular specialty interests include benign Upper GI, Colorectal, and Breast Surgery including laparoscopic Colorectal surgery and Oncoplastic reconstruction. It is a busy clinical environment with a large volume of elective and emergency surgery and scope for personal development. A number of our current trust grade registrars are completing their FRCS examinations.

Swindon is a major town set within the rural beauty of Wiltshire, nestling between the Cotswolds to the North and Marlborough Downs to the South. Travel to major cities including Bristol, Oxford and London is easy with very frequent rail links and within an hour's journey by rail. The M4 motorway is within a couple of miles for travel by road. Locally, accommodation is affordable for this part of the country and there are excellent shopping, social and sports facilities within easy reach.

Key Responsibilities

1. To support and supervise junior colleagues as appropriate.
2. To contribute to the leadership and development under the direction of the Lead Clinician and Associate Medical Director and in line with the Trust's business plans.
3. The post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Directorate including support to the Divisional Director to achieve their objectives.
4. Work in partnership with colleagues in other Directorates within the Trust.
5. Work within the Trust's framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, including the development of clinical policies and adherence to standing orders, standing financial instructions and financial procedures.

Candidates are responsible for covering the cost of their own DBS check if required: £21.50 for a Standard DBS check, recoverable from the first pay, or £49.50 for an Enhanced DBS check, divided and recoverable over the initial two pay periods.
