Job summary

A leading healthcare provider in the UK seeks a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join their team in Luton. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing patients in respiratory wards, conducting daily rounds, and providing consultant-level support in various medical settings. Applicants must be fully registered with the UK General Medical Council and have at least 2 years of clinical experience in Elderly Medicine. This is a full-time role with a 40-hour weekly commitment and potential for emergency interventions.

Job description
Key Duties
  • Consultant cover for respiratory base ward, respiratory HDU, medical outliers, GP X-ray reporting, and reviewing medical patients by consultation request from non‑respiratory wards, ITU, and HDU.
  • Participate in Needs Based Care model activities, contributing to speciality take and front‑door in‑reach.
  • Daily ward rounds with the consultant team and day‑to‑day management of all patients on the Respiratory unit and Respiratory HDU.
  • Review patients on other medical wards and the emergency department for respiratory HDU admissions and non‑invasive ventilation support.
  • Occasional early starts and out‑of‑hours commitment as required.
  • Rotate into additional duties such as respiratory ward cover, US pleural procedures, bronchoscopic examinations, and out‑patient clinic duties if opportunities arise.
  • Seek appropriate consultant advice in case of difficulties and perform work within level of expertise.
Schedule & Working Hours

Full‑time, 40‑hour week from 9 am to 5 pm on a daily basis. Occasional early starts and out‑of‑hours commitment may be required. Travel between hospital sites may be necessary.

Key Qualifications
  • Fully registered with the UK General Medical Council.
  • Minimum of 2 years clinical experience in Elderly Medicine.
  • Capacity to work full‑time. Candidates unable for personal reasons to work full‑time also invited to apply.
  • Subject to full occupational health clearance and enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check before commencement.
Other Information

The appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract (England). All new staff will be subject to a probationary period covering their first six months in post.
