Job description
Overview

Applications are invited for the above full time post for this 660 bed acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. This appointment will be made in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England) 2002.

The appointee will join the General Medicine team in the delivery of clinical excellence within the practice across all of the Medicine specialties. The Trust acknowledges that clinical fellows have training needs as much as those who participate in the deanery training programs. If appointed to this role the trust is committed to supporting your training and development so that you can progress in your chosen career.

Responsibilities
  • The Clinical Fellow will be supervised by the Specialty Registrar, Senior Clinical Fellows, Specialty Doctors and Consultants. He/she will work in close liaison with the multidisciplinary team involved with rehabilitation of patients; write discharge summaries; participate in on‑take duties and attend out-patient clinics, etc.
  • Perform a float role within the 1:24 Acute rota or the 1:30 ward rota, occupying lines on rota that are empty due to vacancy, Deanery gaps, maternity leave or less than full time posts. Expected to fill these lines for a period of no less than 3 months before rotating to a different position. The standard CF role rotates every 3 months.
  • Provide a CMT/ST1-2 level of staffing for the department.
  • Attend ward and board rounds with Consultants, the Specialty Doctor and other Training Doctors / Foundation Year 2 doctors.
  • Support educational development of junior clinical fellows (FY1 & FY2 equivalent).
  • Deliver and organise training sessions covering the full range of medical and surgical management.
  • Provide expertise and supervision for junior clinical fellows on medical management of complex admissions.
  • Ensure learning from incidents and complaints is cascaded within the junior doctor team.
  • Identify issues with ward‑based care pathways and contribute to quality improvement initiatives to rectify them.
  • Coordinate ward‑based duties amongst the clinical team covering the wards to protect time for colleagues to participate in educational opportunities and non‑ward based duties (eg clinics).
  • In case of difficulties, seek the advice of the appropriate consultant. Do not participate in work beyond the level of expertise.
  • Deputise from time to time for absent colleagues as consistent with proper discharge of duties.
  • Occasionally perform additional duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances; be available for irregular commitments as essential for patient care.
