Qualifications

Overview

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a State Registered Clinical Embryologist (or final year STP student) to join the Cambridge IVF laboratory. This NHS fertility centre offers EmbryoScope culture, a cryopreservation program and advanced methods for sperm preparation, selection and injection. We provide high quality, evidence-based treatment to NHS funded patients and self-funding patients at exceptional value. The unit is forward-thinking with strong links to local research groups within the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the Sanger Institute, and beyond.

Applicants should possess a First or Upper Second Class Biological Sciences degree, a relevant postgraduate qualification and be state registered as a Clinical Embryologist. Training in ICSI can be provided if not already skilled in this area.

Job Responsibilities
  • A Clinical Scientist state registered with the HCPC (or in the last year of the STP program), a member of ACE and in good standing with both organisations.
  • Apply scientific knowledge and highly developed skills to deliver a range of assisted conception and diagnostic services in East of England's largest NHS tertiary referral centre.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of efficient embryology and andrology services within the terms of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act and the HFEA Code of Practice.
  • Contribute to the safe operation of the facility cryostore, its audit and generation of paperwork for inspection.
  • Collaborate with laboratory, nursing, medical teams and other allied professions to deliver high quality patient care and clinical excellence.
  • For pre-registrant embryologists in the final year of the UK STP program, positions are offered at Band 6 with progression to Band 7 on UK State Registration.
  • The working pattern involves four long days (07:30–17:30) and includes weekend and out-of-hours work with on-call rota requirements.

Qualifications

Essential

  • 1st Class or 2(i) Degree in Biological Science; relevant postgraduate qualifications
  • HCPC State Registration as a Clinical Embryologist or in final year of STP training (Band 6 Entry)
  • Member of ARCS

Desirable

  • RCPath Part I and Part II Qualification
  • Further Specialist Training
  • PhD in a Biological Science

Experience

  • Essential: Experience of working in a Cryobank and vitrification of embryos; commitment to CPD
  • Desirable: Experience in performing ICSI and PICSI; staff/student supervision; Trophectoderm Biopsy; diagnostic andrology procedures

Knowledge

  • Essential: Knowledge of relevant legislation; advanced knowledge of reproductive biology; familiarity with data analysis software; health and safety and risk management
  • Desirable: Adept statistics; laboratory management; management of clinical trials

Skills

  • Essential: Highly motivated, positive attitude to change; excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Desirable: Leadership and motivational skills; patient counselling skills
