Role Overview
The General Foreman is responsible for the day‑to‑day site management of civils works, leading operatives, plant and subcontractors to deliver safe high‑quality and productive works in line with programme and method statements.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Site Supervision: Oversee day‑to‑day operations at the construction site ensuring work progresses according to schedule and meets quality standards.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Implement and enforce health and safety protocols to create a safe working environment for all personnel on‑site.
- Resource Management: Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers and site personnel to ensure the availability of resources and materials needed for the project.
- Budget Control: Monitor project expenses to ensure adherence to the budget and identify cost‑saving opportunities.
- Quality Assurance: Conduct inspections and quality checks to ensure compliance with specifications and regulations.
- Problem‑solving: Identify and address issues or obstacles that arise during construction, implementing effective solutions.
- Team Leadership: Lead and motivate site personnel, providing guidance, support and training as needed.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of project activities, including daily progress reports, change orders and correspondence with stakeholders.
Key Delivery Responsibilities:
- Directly manage site teams delivering civils activities.
- Plan daily and weekly works, allocating labour, plant and materials.
- Ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently and to specification.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping, quality and productivity.
- Lead site briefings, toolbox talks and inductions.
- Ensure RAMS are followed and works comply with H&S legislation.
- Liaise with site management engineers and the Civils Delivery Lead.
- Identify and resolve site issues, risks and constraints.
- Record progress, productivity and site reporting.
- Support weekend working when required.
Skills and Experience
- Experience: Significant experience in civils construction management; proven experience as a Foreman / General Foreman in civils work.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of construction methods, materials and techniques, including drainage, RC works, earthworks, trenching and ducting; familiarity with relevant regulations and industry standards.
- Health and Safety Certification: NEBOSH or IOSH; SMSTS essential.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to liaise with clients, subcontractors and site personnel; ability to lead and motivate site teams.
- Leadership Abilities: Strong leadership and decision‑making skills to motivate and inspire team members.
- Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational and time‑management abilities, prioritising tasks and managing multiple responsibilities.
- Problem‑solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills to identify issues and develop practical solutions.
- Qualifications: Relevant degree in construction management, civil engineering or a related field; equivalent experience considered.
- Computer Literacy: Proficiency in project management software and Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with BIM software advantageous.
- Desirable: First Aid at Work; Temporary Works Supervisor; Street Works (NRSWA).
