Overview

We are recruiting library assistants to join our casual pool. Forget the traditional view of a library – we are now vibrant community hubs offering a safe space for all. A modern library service doesn’t only offer books. We also provide digital services, community engagement, a social experience, access to lifelong learning and a warm welcome for everyone. Calderdale Libraries participate in the Warm Welcome scheme each year, supporting the Council’s commitment to helping residents with the cost‑of‑living crisis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the public in a library or other customer‑service environment (paid or voluntary)
  • Assist customers with computerised systems, Wi‑Fi, wireless printing and scanning, digital books and apps
  • Support key holding, building responsibilities, cash management and lone working as required
  • Participate in promotional activities and community engagement events to keep libraries relevant to local communities
  • Maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors
Requirements
  • Literate and numerate, with a good general level of education
  • Experience of working with the public in a library or other customer‑service environment (paid or voluntary)
  • Some experience using computerised systems and online services
  • Flexibility to work across different sites and on various shifts, including standing for large parts of the day
Interview Information

Closing Date: Sunday 1st February 2026

Interview Dates: 10th, 12th, 17th March 2026. We may utilise digital interview methods.
