Job summary

To carry out maintenance works on internal and external fabric of the Trust Estate and where necessary assist in the allocation and supervision of others work. To be responsible for cooperating with and advising a multi-disciplined workforce on suitable methods and techniques and resources, undertaking work associated with all building fabric and equipment within the Trust's Establishments.

Assist and deputise for the Lead Carpenter in providing technical support to estates staff and contractors on issues that are complex and non-routine including the regulatory compliance of fire doors as part of a maintenance programme. Follow departmental and Trusts operating policies and procedures guided by building and H & S regulations when undertaking this role and works closely with the Estates Officer but also independently without regular supervision.

Main duties of the job
  • Support the Lead Carpenter/Estates Officer in providing quotations to other departments based on time and material costs.
  • To support and in the absence of the Lead carpenter, plan maintenance activities including staff availability and overtime, sourcing supplies.
  • To assist with the maintenance of stock and supplies for the Estates Department.
  • To ensure that safety procedures are observed in the use of plant, equipment, materials and working procedures and ensure that a safe working environment is maintained at all times in accordance with Health & Safety Regulation.
  • To assist with induction training of new staff and to train new and existing staff in the application of new equipment and procedures.
  • To work outside their trade in the event of an emergency or as directed by the Estates Officer/Head of Estates
  • To be able to drive and hold a clean driving license.
  • Any other duties as delegated by the Estates Officer relevant to the post/department.

Person Specification

Education Qualifications & Training (Essential)

  • Apprenticeship served or equivalent experience
  • City and Guilds/NVQ3 or equivalent experience
  • Specialised Courses incl Fire Door Installation/Maintenance, Locksmith or equivalent experience

Experience (Essential)

  • Recent and significant post qualification experience, preferably within a healthcare environment.
  • Experience of cross team working.
  • Regulatory Compliance.
  • Appointed competent person in an HTM discipline.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Essential)

  • Construction and maintenance skills, including familiarity with the relevant regulations and guidance.
  • Experienced on working on large estates in complex working environments.
  • Experience of working on large motor/generator installations and associated switchgear.
  • Ability to work on one's own initiative prioritise & sometimes come up with a bespoke workaround.
  • Understand, interpret and create drawings, specifications, schedules and plans.

Desirable

  • IT literate, including various types of software.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
