Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Operations Management
- Oversee day‑to‑day café operations, ensuring excellent customer service and a high‑quality food and beverage offering.
- Manage stock control, ordering, and supplier relationships to minimise waste and maintain appropriate levels.
- Monitor health, safety, and hygiene standards, ensuring full compliance with food safety regulations.
- Ensure all areas of the premises are always kept clean and tidy.
- Handle cash management, till reconciliation, and banking procedures.
- Fill in for Café and Bookshop staff to cover holidays.
- Manage the donations, sorting and collections of books, in the absence of the bookshop manager.
- Minimise controllable costs and shrinkage at all times.
- Stock management on Cybertill.
- Liaise with other departments such as Fundraising, Finance and Facilities.
- Liaise with Community Groups for use of the premises for events outside normal opening hours.
Staff Management
- Recruit, train, supervise, and support café & bookshop staff and volunteers, fostering a positive and motivated team culture.
- Organise staff and volunteer rotas and manage holiday requests to ensure appropriate cover at all times, including covering for absences when other staff/volunteers not available.
- Conduct regular team meetings and performance reviews, providing feedback and development opportunities.
- Lead by example, promoting excellent service standards and teamwork.
- General administration using Better Impact Volunteer management system, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Customer Service & Business Growth
- Ensure all customers receive a warm, friendly, and efficient service.
- Handle customer enquiries, feedback, and complaints professionally.
- Support the management team to develop promotions, marketing initiatives, and events to increase revenue.
- Monitor sales performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Work with the fundraising team to develop income generation opportunities.
- Work alongside Café Chef and the Area Café & Trading Manager to maximise profits while remaining competitive.
Our Perfect Worker
Essential
- Previous experience in café, restaurant, or hospitality management.
- Strong leadership and staff management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of health, safety, and food hygiene regulations.
- Ability to work under pressure, multitask, and problem‑solve effectively.
Desirable
- Barista and/or food preparation experience.
- Basic financial management and budgeting skills.
- Familiarity with point‑of‑sale (POS) systems.
This role requires flexibility to work Saturdays and public holidays as part of the regular shift pattern.
