Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Operations Management
  • Oversee day‑to‑day café operations, ensuring excellent customer service and a high‑quality food and beverage offering.
  • Manage stock control, ordering, and supplier relationships to minimise waste and maintain appropriate levels.
  • Monitor health, safety, and hygiene standards, ensuring full compliance with food safety regulations.
  • Ensure all areas of the premises are always kept clean and tidy.
  • Handle cash management, till reconciliation, and banking procedures.
  • Fill in for Café and Bookshop staff to cover holidays.
  • Manage the donations, sorting and collections of books, in the absence of the bookshop manager.
  • Minimise controllable costs and shrinkage at all times.
  • Stock management on Cybertill.
  • Liaise with other departments such as Fundraising, Finance and Facilities.
  • Liaise with Community Groups for use of the premises for events outside normal opening hours.
Staff Management
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and support café & bookshop staff and volunteers, fostering a positive and motivated team culture.
  • Organise staff and volunteer rotas and manage holiday requests to ensure appropriate cover at all times, including covering for absences when other staff/volunteers not available.
  • Conduct regular team meetings and performance reviews, providing feedback and development opportunities.
  • Lead by example, promoting excellent service standards and teamwork.
  • General administration using Better Impact Volunteer management system, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Customer Service & Business Growth
  • Ensure all customers receive a warm, friendly, and efficient service.
  • Handle customer enquiries, feedback, and complaints professionally.
  • Support the management team to develop promotions, marketing initiatives, and events to increase revenue.
  • Monitor sales performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Work with the fundraising team to develop income generation opportunities.
  • Work alongside Café Chef and the Area Café & Trading Manager to maximise profits while remaining competitive.

  • Previous experience in café, restaurant, or hospitality management.

  • Knowledge of health, safety, and food hygiene regulations.
  • Ability to work under pressure, multitask, and problem‑solve effectively.
Desirable
  • Barista and/or food preparation experience.
  • Basic financial management and budgeting skills.
  • Familiarity with point‑of‑sale (POS) systems.

This role requires flexibility to work Saturdays and public holidays as part of the regular shift pattern.
