Job description

Job Title: CAD Technician / CAD Engineer – Power & Energy (Biomass / Thermal)

Location: Wolverhampton

Employment Type: Permanent

Salary: £45-55k + pension & benefits

Overview

We are seeking an experienced CAD Technician / Engineer to join our design and engineering team, supporting the development and delivery of biomass and thermal power generation projects across the UK and Europe. The successful candidate will have a strong background in 2D detailed design, with complementary experience in 3D modelling and Navisworks coordination, ideally gained within the energy, process, or heavy industrial sectors.

Key Responsibilities

Produce 2D detailed design drawings, layouts, schematics, and fabrication details for mechanical, civil, and electrical systems associated with biomass and thermal power stations.

Develop and maintain accurate CAD models and drawings in line with project and client standards.

Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams (process, mechanical, civil, EC&I) to ensure coordinated and constructible designs.

Support 3D model reviews using Navisworks — performing clash detection, visualisation, and design validation.

Ensure all drawings adhere to company CAD standards, drawing conventions, and revision control.

Assist in the preparation of as-built documentation, engineering deliverables, and design handover packages.

Liaise with engineers, project managers, and clients to clarify design requirements and resolve drawing issues.

Participate in design reviews, constructability assessments, and value engineering sessions.

Maintain organised drawing files and contribute to continuous improvement of CAD processes and templates.

Essential Skills & Experience

Demonstrable experience as a CAD Technician or CAD Engineer within the energy, process, or industrial sectors — ideally biomass, thermal power, or CHP projects.

Proficient in AutoCAD 2D with strong technical drawing and detailing ability.

Working knowledge of 3D CAD software (such as Autodesk Plant 3D, Inventor, or SolidWorks).

Experience using Navisworks for model coordination and clash detection.

Understanding of engineering drawings, P&IDs, general arrangements, and fabrication details.

Familiarity with mechanical, piping, or structural layouts within power or process plant environments.

Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to work to deadlines.

Strong communication and teamwork skills with a proactive approach.

Desirable Qualifications

HNC / HND / Degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent discipline).

Experience working within EPC / design & build environments.

Knowledge of BIM processes and design coordination across disciplines.

Familiarity with plant layout design principles and construction sequencing.

What We Offer

Competitive salary and benefits package.

Opportunity to work on innovative and sustainable energy projects.

Supportive environment encouraging professional growth and development.
