Overview
At Pathology First, we are looking for a talented Microbiology Biomedical Scientist Team Manager (Training Lead) to join our HUB in Basildon. This is a pivotal leadership role where you will shape training programs, mentor scientists, and influence the future of microbiology services at SYNLAB.
External candidates will be entitled to a joining bonus of £5,000. Additionally, for Band 7/8c roles, a discretionary team performance bonus of up to 5% of salary per annum may apply.
Main duties
- Provide clinical analytical services for patients and service users.
- Manage day-to-day staffing in area of responsibility to ensure safe service delivery and maintenance of turnaround times (TATs).
- Be involved in, and where appropriate responsible for, service developments.
- Supervise and ensure training and competency assessment of staff in area of responsibility.
- Carry out staff appraisals.
- Be responsible for quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) in area of responsibility, investigate non-conformances, document them, and implement changes where necessary.
- Write and maintain SOPs in area of responsibility.
- Develop and coordinate training across Pathology First for laboratory staff to support multi-site and cross-disciplinary working.
- Work with the Operations Manager for Strategic Development and BMS Team Managers with Training Lead responsibilities to deliver key objectives.
- Plan for today’s workforce and develop a pipeline to meet future requirements, supporting staff progression from MLAs to Laboratory Technician posts and from Specialist BMSs to future BMS Team Managers.

Job description
Responsibilities
- Organise and manage a team of Biomedical Scientists, junior staff and support staff, ensuring workload processing complies with Quality Standards and KPIs.
- Maintain HCPC standards for registered Biomedical Scientists.
- Provide expert technical advice to clinicians on test appropriateness, timescales and scientific guidance for Hub and Essential service laboratory teams.
- Have expert analytical and technical knowledge for specialist analytical procedures.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory directives, accreditation bodies and local management (HCPC, Pathology First policies/SOPs, MHRA, NHSCSP, HTA, HFEA, and others).
- Produce and manage SOPs; manage introduction of new technologies/processes to maximise benefits.
- Manage External and Internal Quality Assurance; report and address poor performance, including staff performance management when required.
- Ensure documentation for Quality Management System is recorded and maintained.
- Communicate clearly in all formats; escalate inquiries when appropriate.
- Plan and organise audits and audit calendars; chair/lead/train Quality, Audit and Management meetings as required.
- Utilise LIMS, Q-Pulse and other software; participate in user groups; maintain and update systems as required.
- Plan and prioritise work allocations and training plans for staff, including junior members, addressing routine and urgent needs.
- Provide management, training and professional leadership; monitor performance against standards and training plans.
- Demonstrate ongoing competency and participate in CPD activities.
- Report and investigate incidents/adverse events in CAPA (Q-Pulse); conduct root cause analysis and remedial actions as required.
- Observe safety regulations; attend mandatory courses; ensure staff attendance within timeframes.
- Risk assessment monitoring according to iPP procedures; ensure equipment is maintained and operated per SOPs.
- Be proficient in the ERP system (Axional). Other duties as required.

- HCPC registered with Specialist portfolio or equivalent in Microbiology. Management qualification to ILM level 3 or relevant experience. MSc / FIBMS (by examination) / IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma; currently in possession of Fellowship Class of the IBMS or equivalent experience.

- Able to work across 3 sites in a 24-7 environment if required. Accurate numeracy, interpretive skills and problem-solving ability. Knowledge of laboratory information management systems (LIMS, etc.) and common software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, statistical packages). Working knowledge of microbiological manual and automated techniques and molecular biology platforms.
