Job description

The Laboratory Medicine Service is spread across four hospital sites within Swansea Bay University Health Board. We are set up as a hub and spoke network of laboratories with the hub laboratory based in Morriston Hospital and spoke laboratories at Singleton Hospital (7 miles from Morriston) and Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend (25 miles from Morriston).

The laboratories are extremely well equipped with Roche, Sysmex and Ortho analysers, and have full accreditation with UKAS, MHRA and IBMS training status.

Swansea Bay Laboratory Medicine team is keen to modernise our service through embracing new ways of working, are committed to developing our knowledge and skills and actively seek to develop others into a professional multidisciplinary team. Staff will be trained to work in all sections of the Laboratory Medicine (Blood Sciences) laboratory with a unique opportunity to rotate into Routine Haematology, Coagulation, Blood Transfusion and General Biochemistry. We welcome applications from candidates with existing skills in a single discipline such as haematology & transfusion or biochemistry with a willingness to cross‑train.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Band 6 BMS you will be providing a comprehensive Laboratory Medicine service as an aid to effective diagnosis and treatment ensuring diagnostically abnormal results are acted upon urgently, you will also deputise for senior staff and assist in the training and supervision of junior members of the team.

The Laboratory Medicine Service is a 24/7/365 operation and a flexible approach to working hours is required. Once competency has been achieved you will be expected to participate in the full shift rota and expected to work at any of the networked laboratory sites as required to maintain quality, training and service requirements.

About Annex 21

Fully qualified Specialist Biomedical Scientist (BMS) Band 6 – only candidates that have successfully completed the IBMS Specialist Diploma will be considered for the full Specialist BMS band 6 post. This must be clearly indicated on your application form.

Trainee Specialist BMS – Applicants who do not hold the full qualifications will be considered for a trainee position and will be subject to Annex 21 of Band 6. It is a condition of appointment to the training position that the required qualifications are achieved. Where situations arise that post holders fail to achieve the required qualifications in the designated timeframes, the service may look to redeploy individuals.

Qualifications
  • BSc in Biomedical Sciences (must be IBMS accredited)
