A leading healthcare provider in Smethwick is seeking a State Registered Biomedical Scientist to deliver high-quality analytical services in Clinical Chemistry. The role demands substantial laboratory experience and the ability to work under pressure. Ideal candidates will be HCPC registered with excellent interpersonal and technical skills. This position offers the opportunity for permanent placement after initial fixed-term employment and supports flexible working arrangements.
Applications are invited from State Registered Biomedical Scientists. Candidates will have substantial experience as a State Registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Chemistry with sound scientific and technical knowledge and abilities and have excellent interpersonal skills and a positive attitude.
The Department is UKAS accredited. It serves a population of around 410,000 with a wider catchment area. It provides a full range of analytical services to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Cannock and Wolverhampton CCGs, producing approximately 6 million test results per year. The laboratory moved into a new state-of-the-art facility in early 2013 equipped with new analysers and pre-analytical systems linked by an automated sample track. Consideration may be given to newly state-registered Biomedical Scientists or students approaching state registration with Clinical Chemistry experience. Although fixed term initially, consideration will be given to convert this to a permanent position following completion of all relevant training and participation in a 24/7 out of hours rota.
Biomedical Scientists are responsible for analysing samples to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes and monitoring of drug therapy by applying automated, semi-automated and manual analytical techniques.
Diagnostic tests include examination of blood, serum, plasma, urine, faeces, biological fluids and renal and gall stones. Investigations include liver, bone and endocrine function tests, sweat tests, therapeutic drug and diabetes monitoring and tumour marker tests.
The post holder will be responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a clinical technical service that achieves efficient and effective patient care. They will work as part of a team on a rotational basis in all diagnostic sections of the laboratory, performing work to the required standards. The department is divided into Automation and Immunoassay, Special Assay, Reception and Separation sections, with each section managed by a Section Leader. The post holder will rotate through sections while maintaining up-to-date knowledge of Clinical Chemistry and current working practices. Following a satisfactory competency assessment, the post holder will be contactable on an emergency line and will work autonomously to provide an out-of-hours analytical Clinical Chemistry service for the Trust.
