Main duties and responsibilities
- Prepare food orders ready to order from supplier.
- Maintain stock control, ensuring regular stock checks and rotation.
- Unload, check and sign for incoming goods against official paperwork, process and file standard order forms and advice notes.
- Deliver, issue and collect orders, food and supplies to/from wards and departments.
- Deal with enquiries/requests both internally and externally.
- Pack and check food orders for ward.
- Maintain and keep up to date records in relation to duties and stock.
- Ensure delivery area kept clean and tidy at all times.
- Concentration required when operating lifting machinery and checking goods orders.
- Promote a positive work culture and share Trust values.
- Maintain own core competences and CPD register, supporting department training needs.
Food control and kitchen duties
- Receive and document food deliveries, ensuring good food hygiene practices and procedure, recording temperatures.
- Record temperatures for refrigerators and freezers.
- Undertake relevant audits.
- Assist in preparing, cooking and dispatch dishes according to a planned menu.
- Assist with special diets and special functions, ensuring good quantity control.
- Prepare and cook food using standardised recipes.
Food service duties
- Serve meals to service users/customers and staff in line with current procedures, including portion control.
- Stock and clean vendors as required.
- Transport food around the site.
- Take payment for food where applicable.
- Ensure dining areas, restaurants and wards are set, prepared and clean ready for food service.
- Assist in presentation of food in dining areas and patient service.
Policies and procedures
- Knowledge of catering, food hygiene, HACCP and food allergen procedures.
- Report unsuitable food items to senior supervisor.
- Maintain required documentation (temperature controls, patient numbers, waste forms) following NHS policies.
Systems and equipment
- Efficient use of catering equipment, trolleys and related items.
Other responsibilities
- Assist supervisor on a day-to-day basis.
- Assist induction and training of other employees.
- Comment on departmental policies and procedures.
- Assist in quality assurance spot checks.
- Maintain records and cleaning schedules.
- Respond to emergencies and staff shortages.
