A prestigious educational institution in Oxford is seeking an Associate Professor of Cosmology to lead research and teaching efforts in the astrophysics sub-department. The successful candidate will contribute to significant research on large-scale structures and cosmic background data and engage actively in student teaching. The position offers a competitive salary within a dynamic academic environment.
Denys Wilkinson Building, Dept. of Physics, Keble Rd, Oxford OX1 3RH & St Peters College
Applications are invited for the post of Associate Professor (or Professor) in the field of Cosmology in the Astrophysics sub-department of the University of Oxford. The successful candidate will also be appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship in Physics at St Peter's College under arrangements described in the Job Description and Person Specification. The appointment will be initially for five years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post-holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age.
Candidates with significant experience in the analysis of large-scale structure and cosmic microwave background data are particularly encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in the exploitation of ongoing and near-future "Stage-IV" surveys, particularly in roles that will complement the expertise that currently exists in the department. This may involve data analysis at any level, the exploitation and development of novel statistical methods, or the theoretical modelling of cosmological and astrophysical observables. They will play a role in the running of the College as a charity trustee and a member of its Governing Body.
The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in the field of astronomy, astrophysics, theoretical physics or related field, and will have a proven record of research in astrophysics. They will be an excellent teacher of undergraduates and graduates and have the interpersonal skills necessary to engage with students and colleagues at all levels.
Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford. All applicants will be judged on merit, according to the selection criteria.
As part of your application, you will be asked to upload a CV (4 pages), a full list of publications (no page limit), a brief cover letter (1 page) and a research proposal (3 pages including figures). The research proposal should set out your plans and priorities for research over the next five years. It can also summarise the past, current and future direction of your research, highlighting how your research has evolved and your key achievements. Your referees should be asked to send their letters, before the application deadline, to Leanne O'Donnell.
Only applications received before noon (UK time) on Friday, 31 October 2025 can be considered. Candidates must be available to travel to Oxford for interviews.
Enquiries about the post should be addressed to Professor Pedro Ferreira, Head of Astrophysics.
The University is an Equal Opportunities Employer.
