Job Description
As Assistant Transport Manager, you will be responsible for the 24/7 transport operations, managing the transport team, and supporting the Transport Manager to ensure costs are controlled in line with budget/forecast expectations.
Working hours: 4 on 4 off nights, 18:00-06:00
Key Duties of an Assistant Transport Manager:
- Manage depot transport staff to execute traffic plans for timely delivery to customers within service levels.
- Reduce non-contract maintenance and damage costs through vehicle passports and daily spend confirmation.
- Ensure fleet availability and declaration to assist planning.
- Motivate and develop the team through engagement, training, and personal development.
- Ensure staff are trained and equipped appropriately.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant statutes and regulations.
- Communicate with third-party hauliers regarding defect control on trailers.
- Approve maintenance cost reports and invoices.
- Ensure timely MOTs and service intervals for fleet.
- Monitor, audit, and control suppliers.
- Attend monthly customer review meetings in the absence of the Transport Manager.
- Support communication via team briefings and KPIs.
- Implement service improvements with customers and internal teams.
- Drive staff and operational improvements for continuous growth.
- Maintain a safe environment for staff and across the business.
- Manage transport budget, including fuel, costs, and KPIs.
- Support initiatives to reduce carbon footprint, such as reducing road miles.
- Deputise for the Transport Manager when needed.
Qualifications:
- Previous transport management experience.
- Experience leading and motivating teams.
- Strong leadership and team-building skills.
- Customer-focused with commercial awareness.
- Problem-solving skills under pressure.
- National and international CPC qualification (desirable).
- Good knowledge of transport operations, especially in shared environments.
- Supervisory experience in FMCG environments.
