A little more about your role… We have an opportunity for an Assistant Project Manager to join our Local Government team, based in Norwich. This role is offered on an initial Fixed Term Contract basis to cover maternity leave. Expected contract duration = 12-months; Start Date = January 2026.

In this Assistant Project Manager role, you will be responsible for on-site supervision of highways construction projects at various locations across Norfolk. You will ensure that your projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with the NEC contract standards.

You will be part of our highly collaborative Local Government team, based in Norwich, and delivering a range of significant projects within the County. Your role will include linking up with resources located in other WSP teams nationwide.

This is a varied role that will involve travel to sites across the county. Your role will include:

  • Overseeing highways construction projects, from small and medium schemes to complex works.
  • Taking ownership of Health & Safety compliance, including CDM Regulations.
  • Communicating effectively with group managers, team managers, and wider stakeholders.
  • Monitoring daily site progress, keep accurate records of on-site activities, and identify construction issues early.
  • Carrying out site supervision and regular checks to ensure all highways work meets specifications and works information.
  • Ensuring high-quality delivery through site audits and final quality checks before handover.
  • Responding to contractor queries and issue site instructions in consultation with the Project Manager.
  • Assisting the Project Manager in monitoring progress, responding to Early Warnings, and evaluating Compensation Events.
  • Providing feedback on traffic and pedestrian management to minimise delays for the travelling public.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
  • Proven experience in site management and highway construction, with strong contract management skills.
  • Solid understanding of NEC contracts, construction techniques, materials, and current health & safety legislation, including CDM compliance.
  • EngTech professional status or similar academic achievement.
  • Ability to interpret complex design guidance and use standard ICT tools for efficient project delivery.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, able to engage confidently at all levels and explain technical issues clearly.
  • Knowledge of technical and environmental standards, relevant legislation, and regulations.
  • Adaptable, pragmatic problem-solver with a track record of developing practical and creative solutions.
