Main duties
  • Undertake a comprehensive assessment of the patient's physical, psychological, social and past ophthalmic history.
  • Ophthalmic examination.
  • Use of assessment or monitoring tools where indicated.
  • Analyse and synthesize findings from relevant assessments, tests and investigations.
  • Request investigations appropriate to scope of practice.
  • Interpret investigations and act on investigation reports.
  • Use guidelines and/or protocols where they exist; present findings to an MDT forum and/or with other health and social care professionals.
  • Determine frequency of review.
  • Provide treatment and care to prevent/minimise secondary complications.
  • Identify and manage deterioration.
  • Address medical emergencies commonly seen within the specialty.
  • Health promotion including lifestyle choices.
  • Advise and coach patients/clients/carers about their condition, treatment options and health/lifestyle activities.
  • Admission and discharge from the specialty area as required; refer to appropriate health and social care professionals and agencies.
  • Act as an expert clinical advisor for colleagues across settings.
  • Act as a resource or educator to others.
  • Lead and/or contribute to the development and delivery of specialist education programmes.
  • Participate in research and audit programmes related to the speciality.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Active Registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • Postgraduate diploma at Level 7 with clinical work-based learning; core educational focus for advanced practice.
  • NST307 or equivalent.
  • Master's Degree.
  • Non-medical Nurse Prescriber.
Knowledge and experience
  • Currently working in a Clinical Nurse Specialist post in ophthalmology.
  • Extensive post-registration clinical experience and practice; highly developed specialist knowledge with theory and experience.
  • Willingness to undertake required skills training; knowledge of the Four Pillars of Practice; awareness of local and national Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist/Advanced Practice agendas.
  • Experience with eye emergency care.
Skills and aptitudes
  • Ability to work under own initiative and prioritise; confidence to work autonomously.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines; strong motivation and personal leadership.
  • Maintains confidentiality and demonstrates integrity; autonomous working in current or previous ACNS role.
  • Experience with/conducting cataract clinics.
Other requirements
  • Holds a clean UK driving licence.
  • Motivated to develop within the ACNS role and deliver high-quality patient care within a multi-professional team.
  • Demonstrates CPD and sustained motivation in a Clinical Nurse Specialist role.
