Job description

As a Nights Operational Support Grade you will support staff during the night period in order to maintain the core requirements of the establishment, ensuring cell doors are locked and secure and all prisoners are safely accounted for.

Nights shifts are normally worked over a 7 day period and are followed by 7 Rest Days, this will average 37 hours per week. You will work public holidays (these days are added to your holiday allowance). For an example of the shift times that you could be working please visit our website.

Responsibilities
  • Night Duties: ensure cell doors are locked/secure and all prisoners are safely accounted for.
  • Carry out regular and effective patrols as required by the Night Orderly Officer and Local Security Strategy.
  • Undertake wing patrols, pegging, and observation of prisoners including those on Assessment Care in Custody & Teamwork (ACCT), or Cat A and E list prisoners as detailed by the Night Orderly Officer and in accordance with the Local Security Strategy.
  • Log any events in the observation book, wing case notes and Security Information Reports (SIRs) as appropriate.
  • Carry out and report roll checks as detailed by the Night Orderly Officer.
  • Work within the Wing Offices as detailed, providing prompt help and support to prisoners who require it.
  • Interact with and support prisoners who are on an open Assessment, Care in Custody & Teamwork (ACCT) or Victim Management Record and record as necessary.
  • Monitor prisoners subject to security checks such as Category A and Escape List.
  • Undertake additional night duties as required, including Gate, personal Identification Numbers (PIN) Phones, production/collation of orders.
  • Give a full briefing of the night's events at handover.
  • Undertake administrative duties relating to area of work as required.
  • Respond appropriately to invoke emergency procedures in line with Local Security Strategy (LSS) and National Security Framework (NSF), utilising knowledge of local contingency plans and the actions required in relation to incidents. Any initial decisions or actions will need to be referred to management for further action.

Qualifications

The job holder must be able to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English or (when specified in Wales) Welsh.

National – £33,411. The salary figures quoted are for a 37‑hour working week inclusive of a 20% unsocial hours working allowance and any additional market supplement payment that will only be paid at certain locations. Hours: average 37 hours per week.
