Job Title

Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation is recruiting temporary snowplow drivers with heavy equipment operation experience for winter road maintenance in the Havre or Harlem sections. Duties include snow removal, right‑of‑way cleaning, guardrail, fence, sign, and luminaire repairs, traffic control, and salt brine production. Positions may begin in mid‑November and end in March, with work on weekends, holidays, and during emergency weather conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Perform snow removal, right‑of‑way cleaning, and guardrail, fence, sign, and luminaire repairs.
  • Operate snowplows and heavy equipment, maintaining traffic control and salt brine production.
  • Work during extreme weather; remain seated for extended periods and perform moderate lifting, carrying, and equipment operation.
  • Respond to call‑outs and emergencies as required.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Maintenance Tech Level I – 1 year heavy truck or construction equipment operation.
  • Valid Montana Commercial Operator’s License (Class A, Type II) with no restrictions, tank endorsement, and a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Maintenance Tech Level II – +1 year documented experience from another road maintenance department.
  • Maintenance Tech Level III – +3 years documented experience from another road maintenance department.
  • Applicants with a learner’s permit or Class B CDL are encouraged to apply.

Other Requirements:

  • Must live or relocate within 45 road miles of the work section headquarters.
  • Ready for call‑outs; seasonal work typically mid‑November‑March.
  • Driver record verification; sign a release form for permanent driving records.
