Description du poste

Do you want to contribute to the design of a superstar on Earth that will generate clean energy from stable nuclear fusion? We are looking for a talented stellarator computational scientist to strengthen our existing team and to develop, apply and maintain our computational tools. The recent Stellarator breakthrough was made possible by enhanced computational and artificial intelligence capabilities to address the complexity of the target plasma shape. Computational physics, optimization and artificial intelligence are the main tools to design our stellarator coils, coil winding surface and related spin‑off technologies.

Responsibilities
Computational activities
  • Develop and implement innovative computational tools and mathematical models to design, predict and optimize the performance and efficiency of our stellarators. Adapt and integrate existing computational tools and mathematical models as needed.
  • Harness the latest breakthroughs in numerical optimization, artificial intelligence, and computational hardware to enhance the predictive capabilities of simulations and identify optimal configurations for stellarator operation.
  • Identify key parameters and constraints for optimization and respond in an agile and proactive way to changes in design requirements.
  • Harmonize the designs with requirements from other departments, for example coils manufacturing.
  • Take part in establishing a comprehensive simulation platform for coupled equilibria involving plasma, liquid walls, coil winding surface and coils.
  • Contribute to the definition and realization of intermediate milestones, by designing prototypes, establishing experimental procedures and processing measurement data by means of customized computational tools and data analysis.
  • Validate numerical models through comparison with experimental data and contribute to the continuous improvement of computational tools for stellarator design and operation.
  • Contribute to the development of new methodologies and means to push the boundaries of stellarator performance.
Scientific outcome
  • Prepare scientific reports, presentations, posters, etc., and represent Renaissance Fusion to scientific conferences, workshops, dedicated panels and/or the public.
  • Proactively propose and/or contribute to the writing of patent filings and scientific papers.
  • Put forward proposals for collaborations and grants.
  • Remain on the forefront of scientific developments in his/her field of expertise.
Requirements

Do not hesitate to apply if you don't meet all the requirements. We are not looking for Superheroes, but people with talent and passion!

Education And Professional Experience
  • PhD or Master’s degree + equivalent experience in plasma physics, computational physics, mathematical physics or nuclear engineering.
  • Research experience in 3D plasma physics or other complex 3D systems.
  • Experience in analytical and/or numerical plasma equilibrium calculations, either 2D or, preferably, 3D.
Languages
  • Fluent in English (C1).
  • Knowledge (B1 or higher) of French is a plus.
Technical Skills
  • Familiarity with fusion-related plasma behaviour (ideally in stellarators but not a must), magnetohydrodynamics, and the interaction between plasma and magnetic fields.
  • Knowledge in computational modelling, numerical methods, and simulation tools, such as Finite Element software packages (such as Ansys or COMSOL), MHD codes, etc.
  • Relevant experience with Artificial Intelligence techniques, such as Machine Learning and Deep Learning, applied to scientific or engineering applications, preferably in the context of plasma physics or fusion research.
  • Awareness on parallel computing and HPC clusters.
  • Strong background in optimization algorithms, including evolutionary strategies, and other metaheuristics approaches for shape and system design.
  • Mastery of Python and other scientific programming languages such as C++, or Fortran, and proficiency in using relevant computational packages and libraries.
  • Modern coding practices (CI, git, testing) and managing legacy codes.
  • Knowledge in running or developing stellarator equilibrium codes is a plus (at least one of: VMEC, GVEC, SPEC, SIESTA, DESC, SIMSOPT, STELLOPT).
