That’s why our Recreation Specialist: Adaptive Recreation & Inclusion Services is such an important role in our Parks & Recreation department. This position helps create a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment for individuals of all abilities across a variety of recreational programs. It’s a fantastic, part-time opportunity for someone interested or experienced in adaptive recreation, therapeutic recreation, disability services, or inclusive programming.

Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day support and supervision for participants in adaptive and inclusive recreation programs
  • Plan, organize, and lead inclusive activities such as adapted games, arts & crafts, fitness, sports, and social programs for youth and adults with disabilities
  • Collaborate with caregivers, support staff, and families to ensure individual participant needs are met
  • Promote a positive and respectful environment that values diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Serve as an inclusion support staff for individuals participating in general recreation programs who need accommodations
  • Professionally engage with parents, caregivers, and participants to share updates and promote upcoming opportunities
  • Assist with activity modifications and adaptive equipment as needed to increase participation
  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment by following emergency procedures and administering First Aid/CPR as needed
  • Ensure program materials and adaptive equipment are clean, safe, and properly stored
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and community events as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience
  • General knowledge of a variety of recreational activities and/or sports
  • Successful passing of a required background check
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • One to two years of applicable experience
  • Minimum age 16
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid WA State Driver’s license required. Accommodations for lack of driver’s license may be considered depending on the assignment or circumstances.
  • Must have or obtain First Aid and CPR within two months of hire

  • Offers of employment are conditional based on the candidate successfully passing both background and reference checks. Internal candidates are subject to passing a new background if the previous check was conducted more than six months ago.
  • Additionally, new hires relocating to the area are required to have Washington State residency within 30 days of their start date to comply payroll tax purposes.
