POSITION OVERVIEW

The Dean of Student Life & Community Standards leads the universitys efforts to foster a respectful, engaged, and accountable campus community. The Dean is responsible for administering the student conduct system, guiding crisis and emergency response, and ensuring that student life policies and programs align with the institutions values and legal obligations. As a senior member of the Student Life leadership team, the Dean serves as a key advisor on student well-being, engagement, and community care. The position works collaboratively with academic and administrative colleagues including the Vice President for Student Life, Dean of Student Development, Dean of Health & Wellness, and the Provost to create an integrated student experience that connects classroom learning with co-curricular and personal development.

STUDENT CONDUCT
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and periodic review of student-related policies to ensure compliance with AUPs policies and applicable American & French laws
  • Serve as a conduct officer, providing thoughtful and developmentally appropriate assessment and implementation of student conduct policies in cases escalated to senior leadership
  • Liaise with university partners to ensure policies are effectively communicated to students through institutional documents and student platforms
  • In collaboration with the Dean of Health & Wellness, provide recommendations for policy revisions to proactively address emerging trends, enhance student awareness, and engagement in the conduct process
  • Identify further opportunities to ensure staff and student leaders have appropriate training and knowledge to support students through the conduct process
  • Create and facilitate training workshops / presentations and serve as a resource for the Student Life conduct hearing officers and student leaders to ensure team operations align with internal policies, reporting obligations, software protocols, and procedural guidelines
  • Adjudicate escalated student conduct cases from Housing & Residential Life
  • Responsible for the management of AUPs Sexual & Moral Misconduct, University Conduct Board, Appeals Committee, including the recruitment and training processes
  • Input and manage all investigative information in the student conduct database, regularly reviewing and updating all letter templates and communication tools Review, update, and disseminate the Student Handbook to ensure it accurately reflects current university policies, procedures, and responsibilities
  • Conduct research and analyze data relative to student conduct issues; track and regularly provide updates about student conduct trends and interventions
EMERGENCY RESPONSE & CRISIS MANAGEMENT
  • Participate and provide support as a member of the on-call rotation and serve on the Emergency Response Team
  • Support students experiencing psychological, health, academic, or financial crises by connecting them to appropriate resources
  • In collaboration with Student Life leadership, contribute to student case management, supports protocols and the implementation of best practices in early intervention, and crisis response to promote student well-being and institutional effectiveness
  • Oversee the assessment, documentation, and resolution of student concerns, ensuring appropriate follow-up and coordination with academic and administrative partners
  • Partner with colleagues to oversee crisis management support and guidance for staff, faculty, students, and their families
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, LEADERSHIP, & STUDENT SUPPORT
  • Provide vision and oversight for student engagement initiatives that strengthen campus community and belonging
  • Supervise the Office of Housing & Residential Life, Office of Student Leadership, and the Student Life Help Desk, ensuring high-quality service, training, and responsiveness
  • Mentor and advise student leaders, including the Student Government Association and Student Advisors, and support their organizational development
  • Collaborate with the VP, Dean of Student Development and the Provost to connect co- curricular and experiential learning opportunities with academic outcomes
  • Contribute to divisional efforts related to student retention, orientation, and transition programs, including conducting exit surveys and complete transfer reports for other universities and colleges
  • Contribute to divisional assessment, communication, and resource management to ensure effective and efficient operations
  • Plays a vital role in facilitating the onboarding of new Student Life software platforms and leading train-the-trainer sessions for team members
  • Support a culture of continuous improvement and data-informed decision-making within the division
  • Perform other duties as may be requested by the Vice President of Student Life and provide leadership coverage alongside designated colleagues during supervisors absence
  • Represent Student Life on institutional committees (i.e. Orientation Task Force, Academic Standing, Calendar Committee) and at key university functions as requested
  • Other appropriate duties may also be assigned as requested by the Supervisor and according to the needs of the Department.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Masters degree (or equivalent) in a related field
  • Minimum of five years' experience in student-facing roles involving student conduct, student support / student care, student engagement, or similar work requiring complex case management, policy application and advocacy
  • Bilingual French / English, written and spoken
  • Significant experience working in and a thorough understanding of American-style institutions of higher education
  • Must be able to effectively support diverse and multicultural learners
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, faculty, and families to advise and support students through challenging and complex situations
  • Experience in leading effective and collaborative crisis management efforts
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Must demonstrate the ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion, exercise sound judgment, and make difficult, time-sensitive decisions with integrity
  • Ability to utilize technology, databases, and institutional platforms in the documentation of records and support of students
  • Ability to manage a budget and operate within the limitations of that budget
  • Valid work permit for France, or EEC nationality
