A leading digital technology institute is seeking an Assistant/Associate Professor in Coding for Images and Video. Responsibilities include designing teaching programs, conducting research, and developing partnerships. Candidates must hold a PhD and be fluent in English. Preferred expertise includes immersive coding and deep learning applications. This permanent position offers flexible remote working options and generous leave benefits.
Télécom Paris, an international multidisciplinary center for education, research, and innovation, is a leader in the digital world.
The team's research activities have historically focused on the processing, analysis, and transmission of multimedia content, with a particular emphasis on visual signal coding, compression architectures, multimedia communication systems, and their applications.
The MM team's interest in these issues can be illustrated through several non-exhaustive application areas. First, image and video coding remains central to traditional broadcasting and streaming applications, where optimizing the bitrate-distortion trade-off, compatibility with existing standards, and implementation efficiency are essential. These challenges are now being renewed by the emergence of new formats and new ways of representing visual content.
Furthermore, new scientific challenges are emerging with the development of immersive coding and machine coding. Augmented and virtual reality applications, 360° video, point clouds, and advanced representations such as Gaussian Splatting require a rethinking of compression models to take into account more complex data structures and real-time interaction requirements. Similarly, machine coding, designed for automatic content analysis by artificial intelligence systems, challenges traditional paradigms centered on human perception.
Finally, the recent rise of foundation models and multimodal artificial intelligence opens up new perspectives at the interface between coding and machine learning. The integration of these models into compression chains raises new scientific questions, both theoretical and practical, concerning the representation of information, the adaptation of coding to downstream tasks, and the design of hybrid pipelines combining classical approaches and AI-based methods.
More generally, as illustrated by the past activities and current challenges of the Multimedia team, the coding systems studied must satisfy both functional properties—related to the fidelity of reconstruction or the relevance of the information transmitted—and non-functional properties such as complexity, latency, robustness, or interoperability with standards. The proposed position addresses this problematic field, with the aim of sustainably strengthening the team's research on image and video coding, while placing it within the context of major developments in modern multimedia and artificial intelligence.
An important mission for this profile, which ideally has expertise in traditional compression pipelines for images and video, is to bridge the gap between the world of traditional compression and the AI experts already present in the Multimedia team, who could help formulate improvements to existing pipelines with the appropriate use of AI. Active participation in standardization consortia and participation in formation continue in traditional and the latest architectures are also important tasks to be carried out by the candidate.
Your main tasks will be to:
To succeed in this role, you have a PhD and you are fluent in English. The position is open to all candidates working in Coding for images and video.
Expertise in the following areas will be preferred:
Coding for machines
Immersive coding
Coding for Gaussian Splatting and 3D
Image and video treatment with deep learning
Development at multiple levels of abstraction
Expertise in open-source project management
