What you will do as a Spanish Payroll Manager...
- Own and run the full, end-to-end Spanish payroll cycle independently - from data collection and validation through to calculations, controls, submissions, payments and reporting.
- Lead and manage the implementation/in-housing of Spanish payroll from current external vendor, including planning, data migration, testing, parallel runs and go-live processes.
- Manage all associated payroll activities in Spain, including starters and leavers, contract changes, benefits and deductions, year-end processes, reconciliations and reporting to Spanish authorities.
- Act as the main point of contact for Spanish payroll, resolving employee and client issues while clearly explaining payroll topics to non-experts across the organization.
- Ensure strict compliance with Spanish payroll legislation and statutory requirements (Seguridad Social, IRPF, mandatory insurances, pensions, etc.) by correctly applying existing rules in daily operations.
- Review and improve payroll processes and controls, documenting procedures and identifying opportunities for standardization and automation across the European payroll function.
What we are looking for...
- Minimum 5 years' hands‑on Spanish payroll experience, with proven end-to-end ownership of the full payroll cycle in in‑house environments.
- Demonstrable experience managing or significantly contributing to the transition of Spanish payroll from an outsourced vendor to an in‑house model, including planning, system sourcing, setup and stakeholder coordination.
- Strong, up-to-date working knowledge of Spanish payroll legislation and statutory requirements (social security, IRPF, benefits, mandatory insurances, etc.) with the ability to apply these accurately in practice.
- Proven ability to run Spanish payroll 100% independently, aligning with internal policies and controls, without day-to-day technical supervision or support.
- Advanced proficiency with Spanish payroll systems/tools and MS Excel, confident with reconciliations, data checks and troubleshooting discrepancies.
- Fluent Spanish and strong English communication skills, comfortable working with Spanish authorities, vendors and international internal stakeholders.
Desirable (but not required):
- Experience working in a multi-country or multi-entity payroll environment, ideally across Europe with vendor management experience.
- Experience in fast‑growing or changing environments, where processes and systems are being built and improved over time.
- Previous experience in an EOR/PEO, global employment, or HR tech environment.
- Experience working with Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Gmail) and collaborative documentation tools like Confluence.
- Startup environment experience with hands‑up‑the‑sleeves mentality.
