Offer Description

The Bioengineering Institute at University Miguel Hernández (UMH) is seeking talented and motivated researchers to join our groundbreaking project aimed at restoring sight. Approximately 354 million individuals worldwide are affected by visual impairment, including 40 million who are completely blind. Unfortunately, around 50% of these individuals are unable to benefit from current or emerging treatments such as gene or stem cell therapies, pharmaceuticals, or retinal prostheses. Although cortical neuroprostheses hold great promise for this population, their development has been limited by several unresolved scientific and technological challenges. Therefore, many efforts are still needed to induce visual percepts that can be helpful in daily life and achieve the therapeutic benefits envisioned by this technology.

The primary goal of the project is to develop groundbreaking technology in the form of a long-lasting implant capable of high-channel-count brain stimulation and recording. In this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a powerful tool in neuroscience, enabling major advances in our understanding of brain function and in the development of technologies that support bidirectional communication with the human brain.

The selected researchers will play a key role in several aspects of the project, including: (i) the development of innovative approaches for stimulating the visual cortex using high-density microelectrode arrays; (ii) the design and implementation of psychophysical tasks to facilitate perceptual learning of different stimulation patterns; and (iii) the development of advanced AI algorithms capable of converting camera input into real-time electrical stimulation parameters. In addition, they will contribute to a clinical trial aimed at identifying the electrical parameters required to evoke visual percepts through intracortical microstimulation of the human visual cortex. For further details on the clinical trial, please refer to the following link: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34665780/ .

Candidates must be highly motivated and able to work effectively in a strongly interdisciplinary environment. A solid background in at least one of the following areas is preferred: artificial intelligence, artificial vision, brain–computer interfaces, neural engineering, or computational neuroscience. Experience with eye-tracking techniques and strong programming skills will be considered an advantage.

Interested applicants with strong motivation in applied neuroscience and neural engineering are invited to contact Prof. Eduardo Fernández. Applications should include a curriculum vitae and a brief statement of background and scientific interests, and should be submitted by email to: e.fernandez@umh.es with copy to p.vicente@umh.es .
