Overview

Our client is a well-established international tech company with a leading platform in software discovery and distribution. Location: Barcelona, Spain. Title: Director of Engineering – IT & Telecommunications. Ref: ZC97169549, June 16, 2025.

We are seeking a hands-on Director of Engineering to shape the technical and strategic direction of a large engineering organization (approximately 40+ engineers), without direct line management responsibilities. This high-impact role involves mentoring engineering leaders, shaping best practices, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and strategic alignment. You will collaborate with Product, Data, Business, and C-Level stakeholders to ensure engineering efforts drive measurable business value, evolve the technical architecture, and champion security and operational maturity. This role suits someone who thrives on influencing at scale and driving organizational impact through leadership, strategy, and deep technical know-how.

Responsibilities
  • Mentor and support engineering leaders across multiple teams (40+ engineers).
  • Define and improve leadership practices in line with organizational growth.
  • Foster a culture of feedback, continuous development, and high performance.
  • Set clear expectations for engineering management roles, aligned with company OKRs.
  • Promote an inclusive, motivating, and purpose-driven team environment.
  • Build strong partnerships with Product to align on goals and execution.
  • Use a data-driven approach to identify challenges and opportunities; communicate business context clearly to engineering teams.
  • Understand key business and financial metrics to ensure technical work adds real value.
  • Define and execute a strategic roadmap aligned with company objectives.
  • Lead the evolution of scalable, secure, and maintainable system architecture.
  • Champion best practices in engineering quality, performance, and incident management.
  • Drive adoption of modern infrastructure and frameworks optimized for scale and cost.
  • Define and uphold high standards for engineering excellence across all domains.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with 5+ years in senior leadership roles.
  • Proven ability to influence large engineering organizations (40+ engineers) without direct people management.
  • Strong background in engineering and product strategy, architectural design, and cross-functional project execution.
  • Skilled at working alongside Product, Data, and Business teams to deliver value-aligned solutions.
  • Deep expertise in cloud infrastructure, scalable system design, and cost optimization.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
