The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to join our Data and AI Engineering team. This role is ideal for individuals who take pride in building secure, scalable, and well-engineered systems that enable real-world data and AI applications in the life sciences domain.

You’ll collaborate with Data Engineers and AI Engineers to develop clean, maintainable code and API-driven architectures that adhere to modern engineering best practices — including testing, observability, and CI/CD workflows. Whether you're early in your journey or a seasoned developer, we welcome those who strive for technical excellence and team-oriented delivery.

What You’ll Do

• Design, implement, and maintain well-documented, testable RESTful APIs using FastAPI, Flask, or similar frameworks.
• Build modular backend components that follow software engineering best practices (e.g., SOLID, DRY, separation of concerns).
• Implement reliable integrations with relational and NoSQL databases, ensuring data integrity and performance.
• Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps, with a focus on automation and quality gates.
• Apply and advocate for security best practices in service design (e.g., authentication, authorization, input validation, least privilege).
• Operate across cloud environments (Azure, AWS, GCP), contributing to platform-agnostic deployment strategies.
• Champion good observability by integrating logging, metrics, and tracing into your services.
• Participate in peer reviews, architecture sessions, and agile ceremonies with a mindset of continuous improvement and shared responsibility.

Core Experience & Skills

• Experience with Python-based backend frameworks like FastAPI, Flask, or similar.
• Strong understanding of RESTful API design, modular architecture, and asynchronous programming.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices, pipelines, and automation tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps).
• Solid experience working with relational (PostgreSQL, SQL Server) and NoSQL (MongoDB, CosmosDB) databases.
• Clear grasp of security fundamentals and how to apply them in backend service development.
• Experience working in cloud-native environments (multi-cloud is a plus).
• Proven ability to apply engineering best practices in code quality, testing, and documentation.
• Team-first mindset and experience in agile environments (Scrum or Kanban).
• Professional working proficiency in English (our internal and client-facing working language).

Nice to Have

• Experience with Docker or Kubernetes for containerization and orchestration.
• Familiarity with OpenAPI, OAuth2, JWT, and API gateway integrations.
• Knowledge of observability tooling (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, OpenTelemetry).
• Collaboration experience with Data Engineers or AI/ML Engineers.
• Understanding of regulated environments such as life sciences, healthcare.
