Job description
in the area of \"Development of a manufacturing process for a PiN diode\"

Chair of Power Electronics and Electrical Drives

Our Profile

The “Reliable Power Electronic Systems” research group develops technologies to increase the reliability and safety of power-electronic systems. Drawing on our experience in multi-domain modelling, system identification, and electronics development, we approach reliability research questions from new perspectives and aim to foster the development of disruptive technologies. Our goal is to develop future power electronics that act as intelligent multi-domain actuators and sensors.

To this end, we develop modelling and characterization tools to simulate electrical, thermal, and mechanical state variables across arbitrary load cycles. Building on this, we predict degradation, ageing, and reliability for all components of a power-electronic system. One focus of our group is real-time monitoring of power-electronic systems. By combining compact real-time models, integrated sensors, and system-identification methods, we develop new monitoring approaches to reliably extract critical system variables such as semiconductor losses, 3D temperature gradients, strains, and electrical and thermal impedances. This protects power-electronic systems from overload. In addition, degradation modes can be diagnosed and the remaining useful life of various power-electronic components can be determined.

Another key research aspect is lifetime-oriented control algorithms which, by selectively reducing thermally induced cycling, decrease thermomechanical strain and thus increase the service life and reliability of power-electronic systems. This approach makes it possible to reduce the weight, volume, and cost of future power-electronics systems without compromising service life or reliability.

Your Profile

Motivation, curiosity and the ability to work independently are key factors. Experience in clean rooms or a particular interest in semiconductor technology is helpful, of course, but not a basic requirement.
Don\'t be shy, because everything can be broken down into small work packages that are easy to learn and work through.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

The aim of this role is to create a manufacturing process for a simple PiN diode. In order to improve teaching and give students a deeper insight into the manufacture of semiconductors, students will process a PiN diode as part of the revision of the ‘Power Semiconductor Devices’ laboratory.

Support is needed for preparing a teaching activity on PiN diodes. Students will support the team in drafting a basic, documented process by gathering information on standard steps and relevant parameters from existing references and organising them under supervision. Together with the supervisors, they will outline the manufacturing steps, required infrastructure and materials for producing simple PiN diodes, and help adapt these into a clean-room teaching format. This will include reviewing the structure and common fabrication routes of PiN diodes, assisting with the set-up of a straightforward process in the clean room, and helping develop a concise concept that introduces clean-room practice and the essential fabrication steps within a short session.

What does this position offer:

It offers the opportunity to gain insight into the functioning and manufacture of semiconductors and to become more familiar with working in a clean room. In addition, the project provides an opportunity to learn more about the preparation and transfer of knowledge, as well as teaching practices.

What We Offer

The successful candidate will be employed as a student assistant.

The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term up to 4 month.

The position is fixed-term for four months, as the work forms part of an update to a course and is to be completed by the summer semester 2026. A continuation of the appointment may be possible by mutual agreement.

This is a part-time contract position.

The standard weekly hours will be 10 hours.

The number of working hours per week can be adjusted flexibly.

The salary is based on the RWTH Guidelines for Student and Graduate Assistants.

The position corresponds to a pay grade of 14.50 euros per hour.
