The Department of Computer Science at Saarland University encompasses the full spectrum of Computer Science and forms a joint faculty with the Department of Mathematics. Moreover, a new Center for Quantum Technologies is being founded to pursue research on quantum technologies in a broad sense, on the hardware side (in quantum physics and quantum engineering) as well as on the software side (in quantum information theory, theoretical
physics and quantum computing). It will include an outpost of the Helmholtz Center “Forschungszentrum Jülich” (FZJ).
These professorial position is fixed-term public sector appointment (‘Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit’) for a maximum period of six years. If the tenure evaluation procedure (teaching appraisal and external assessment of research work) is positive, the respective appointee will be promoted to a permanent professorship (lifetime tenure) at the German academic salary scale W3.
This professorship is a joint professorship (`Brückenprofessur’) belonging to both departments, Mathematics and Computer Science and will be part of the new Center for Quantum Technologies (QuTe). The position involves active participation in research and teaching, including teaching basic courses of both mathematics and computer science. The teaching languages are English and (in some basic courses) German. Contributions are also expected to
a new M.Sc. study program in Quantum Information. The professorship will take an active role in the expansion of research and transfer activities in quantum information theory at Saarland University and associated research institutions, in particular the Helmholtz Center Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ). The professorship will acquire external funding and contribute to joint research proposals to strengthen the department, faculty and university.
Requirements: The successful candidate will have exceptional research skills proven by high-quality peer-reviewed computer science publications, international visibility and a research focus in quantum information theory, preferably with an emphasis on quantum algorithms or quantum complexity theory, or alternatively on other aspects of quantum information in mathematics and computer science. The candidate is also expected to have acquired teaching experience and to acquire the ability to teach in German after a suitable time period. Experience in the acquisition of third party funds is required, ideally in large joint projects. The successful candidate must show potential for collaboration across disciplines, especially with the existing quantum professorships in the departments of Mathematics and Physics.
