Jobbeschreibung

The University of Kassel is a modern and growing University with round about 21,000 students. The university’s wide range of expertise covers subjects in the natural, applied, cultural and social sciences.

W 2 Professorship animated films, part‑time position (50%)

Application deadline: 26.01.2026

Date of hire: 01.03.2027

Vacancy number: 38973

The focus of the position is to teach animation as a form of artistic expression and a means of communication, with a foundation in classical animated films. This basis can then open up into the wide variety of contemporary animation practices, including digital methods of production, experimental techniques, and interactive narrative forms.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate an exceptional, internationally recognized artistic practice in the area of animation art. They should have a sound knowledge of both the various classical and digital animation techniques as well as the theoretical debates about the fundamentals of the medium. A particular focus should be given to stop frame animation and puppet construction.

As a teacher and researcher, the position should reflect on animation in its aesthetic, technical, theoretical, and political dimensions. Collaboration with other departments at the Kunsthochschule by interacting with artistic‑creative development plans is expected. Applicants must demonstrate their qualifications for teaching at (art) academies and hold appropriate teaching experience.

A teaching and working concept (max. 2 pages) demonstrating the candidate’s pedagogical approaches as well as his or her reflections on cooperative and cross‑departmental work in university teaching should be included with the application. The teaching concept should also describe how the breadth of the profile and the content defined in it will be communicated in the teaching process. Ability to conduct teaching in German must be demonstrated, and very good English skills are a clear advantage. Documentation must be provided of a relevant degree from an art academy or proven experience in academic self‑management.

The current teaching load for the half‑time position is 9 semester hours per week (according to LVerpflV HE, the Hessian Ordinance on Teaching Duties), which can be fulfilled in Visual Communication by supervising a class, in this case the Animation class. The prerequisites for employment and performance requirements are determined by:

  • 67, 68 of the Higher Education Act of the Federal State of Hesse. The appointment is made on a salaried basis. The application should demonstrate the candidate’s particular skills in artistic work as well as his or her outstanding artistic achievements during multiple years of successful professional engagement conducive to the requirements of a professorship, as well as the required pedagogical aptitude.
