Steel Coating Inspector (m/f/d)

We are currently seeking an experienced Steel Coating Inspector to support projects at Meyer Werft Papenburg, involving the newbuild construction of offshore converter platforms BorWin 4, DolWin 4, BalWin 1 and BalWin 2, starting February 2026 for an estimated duration of 12–13 months. This freelance role is onshore based in Papenburg, Germany, operating on a Monday to Friday schedule, with rare potential weekend assignments depending on operational requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Inspection and supervision of steel surface preparation and coating works
  • Execution of inspections according to Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs)
  • Welding and assembly surveillance related to coated steel structures
  • Supervision of outfitting works, including passive fire protection
  • Review of as-built documentation and on-site documentation
  • Documentation of inspection results, deviations, and non-conformities
  • Coordination with yard personnel, subcontractors, and site teams
  • Participation in alignment meetings and safety walks
  • Ensuring compliance with quality, safety, and project requirements
Requirements
  • Completed technical apprenticeship, e.g. Coating Inspector (m/f/d), Welding Inspector (m/f/d), Industrial Mechanic (m/f/d), Steel Construction Mechanic (m/f/d) or comparable
  • Proven experience in steel coating inspection and surface preparation
  • Experience in inspection, acceptance, or quality control
  • Experience on shipyard, offshore, steel construction, or industrial projects
  • Familiar with ITPs, technical specifications, and quality standards
  • Confident handling of inspection documentation and reporting
  • German and English at working proficiency
  • Detail-oriented, reliable, and able to work independently on site

  • Minimum required certificates:
    • VT2 certification according to ISO 9712
    • Certified Coating Inspector (FROSIO Level 2 or NACE Level 2)
    • Certified Welding Engineer or Welding Technician (e.g. CSWIP 3.1 or higher)
  • Compensation:
    • All-in freelance day rate: EUR 500 – 550 per day, based on an 8-hour working day
    • The day rate is all-in and covers all services as well as typical project-related expenses, including travel costs
    • Monthly invoicing based on approved timesheets
