Offer Description

Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) bundles top-level research and transfer at an international level, thereby creating an interdisciplinary innovation network and an excellent science and technology location. Together with its renowned partners, the BTU forms the Lausitz Science Network - an alliance of research institutions that together want to further develop the strengths of the science location Cottbus-Senftenberg and increase its visibility. Through innovative research and new teaching and learning formats, the BTU is shaping the future: with scientific findings and practice-relevant solutions, it is helping to shape the major issues of the future and transformation processes. In four profile lines: "Energy Transition and Decarbonisation", "Health and Life Sciences", "Global Change and Transformation Processes" and "Artificial Intelligence and Sensor Technology" – it combines its strengths in teaching and research across institutes and faculties.

At its locations in Cottbus and Senftenberg, the BTU guarantees its students a challenging education, individual support and the opportunity to learn from and with each other with curiosity and openness. The BTU stands for an inspiring atmosphere of learning and research in a dialogical, democratic cooperation of all: The diversity of our faculty and students enables innovation and progress.

The Faculty of Environment and Natural Sciences invites applications for a

Professorship (W2) Theoretical Chemistry/ Theoretische Chemie

commencing at the earliest opportunity.

The Institute of Materials Chemistry brings together professors with research interests in (bio)organic and inorganic-physical aspects of modern materials science, which can be summarized under the heading “From molecules to materials and back again.” The Chair of Theoretical Chemistry is intended to expand the existing research profile of the Institute of Materials Chemistry in a meaningful way with its own research aspects of materials chemistry and to support and further develop existing research topics in cooperation with the participating professorships, as outlined in the research concept. Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues at the Senftenberg site and beyond, as well as close cooperation with non-university research institutions such as the IZI-BB, the IWF Dresden, the BAM, the IHP, the HZDR, the IPMS, and the IAP, is desirable. Within the overall concept of the Institute of Materials Chemistry at the Faculty of Environmental and Natural Sciences, the professorship belongs to the profile lines “Energy Transition and Decarbonization” and “Health and Life Sciences” and is located on the Senftenberg campus.

The position is of particular interest to candidates with expertise in

  • density functional theory and hybrid density functionals, semi-empirical quantum chemistry methods
  • electron dynamics simulations and/or
  • molecular dynamics simulations and molecular modelling

applied to current issues in materials chemistry (“materials modeling”), such as modelling

  • of structures of crystalline, porous, and polymeric materials
  • of thermomechanical, chemical, kinetic, and spectroscopic properties, including cross-scale models
  • of infrared, Raman, and NMR spectra of complex solids

as well as AI-based routines and machine learning (data-driven modeling, machine-learned force fields (MLFF), structure-property relationships) for the evaluation of large data sets and to generate new research approaches.

In teaching, the professorship will represent the breadth of theoretical chemistry, in particular quantum chemistry and electron theory of solids and their application to chemical problems. In addition, the fundamentals of spectroscopy and instrumental analysis will be taught in the German-language bachelor's program “Applied Natural Sciences” and in the English-language international master's program "Chemistry: Materials, Engineering and Sustainability."

We are looking for a nationally and internationally recognized personality with extensive experience in the field of theoretical chemistry, demonstrated by relevant publications in scientific journals and independently acquired third-party funding, who will represent the field in research and teaching and, in particular, pursue the above-mentioned research priorities. The professor will represent the above-mentioned areas in research and teaching in the Applied Natural Sciences (B.Sc., German) and Chemistry: Materials, Engineering and Sustainability (M.Sc., English) programs and in other programs at the BTU, as well as teaching in the bachelor's and master's programs in German and English. We expect a high level of commitment to working on site, in the management of the institute and the faculty, in university and non-university committees, and in the further development of the institute in teaching and research.

If there is no sufficient knowledge of German, the willingness to learn the German language as soon as possible is required, which ensures the cooperation in the management of the institute, the faculty and in university and non-university committees as well as the teaching of the Bachelor's degree programmes in German.
