Jobbeschreibung
Professorship in Evolutionary Medicine (W2)

With the establishment of the DFG-funded Cluster of Excellence Leipzig Center of Metabolism (LeiCeM), new opportunities will arise from 2026 at Leipzig University/Faculty of Medicine to develop new research areas in the field of metabolic diseases. Therefore, as of January 1, 2027, the Faculty of Medicine at Leipzig University is seeking to fill the following permanent professorship, initially funded by the DFG:

The professorship will be assigned to an existing institute or clinical division, depending on its thematic orientation and compatibility. The holder will independently develop and represent the field of Evolutionary Medicine in both teaching and research. The appointed individual will lead an independent unit that brings together the role of evolutionary dynamics in human evolution with the principles of health and disease in a manner visible at the international level. Active participation in LeiCeM collaborative projects is also expected, as well as a contribution to the conceptual development of the research priorities of the Faculty of Medicine and Leipzig University, in close cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (EVA) in Leipzig.

A completed university degree – preferably in a discipline closely related to medicine – a doctorate, and a habilitation or an equivalent academic qualification, as well as university teaching experience and proven teaching aptitude, are required. A license to practice medicine is desirable but not a prerequisite for appointment. In addition, candidates are expected to demonstrate an excellent record of publications, successful acquisition of third-party funding, as well as methodological expertise and experience in evolutionary biology and in both basic medical and clinical research. A strong thematic alignment with the molecular and clinical foundations of metabolic diseases, neurobiological processes, and/or mechanisms of cellular signal transduction is desired.

The rights and obligations of the position holder are defined by the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG) and the Higher Education Service Duties Regulation (HSDAVO). Applicants must meet the appointment requirements according to § 59 SächsHSG.

The Faculty of Medicine is committed to increasing the proportion of women in research and teaching. Qualified female researchers are therefore explicitly encouraged to apply.

Candidates with severe disabilities will be given preference if equally qualified.

Please submit your application within six weeks of publication exclusively via Leipzig University’s appointment portal.
