Jobbeschreibung
Overview

The Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) is one of the largest practice-oriented higher education institutions in Bavaria. With focus areas ranging from technology to social sciences and economics, design and languages, THWS covers a wide subject spectrum. We accompany around 9,300 students in more than 50 degree programmes on their educational path. We tackle challenges to society, such as the energy system transformation and the climate crisis, with innovative and international degree programmes. THWS has pioneered bilingual degree programmes (TWIN programmes), established the first undergraduate degree in Hydrogen Technology, and a software-centred degree programme in Robotics. Digitisation is an important focus area, and under the Hightech Agenda Bavaria the Free State of Bavaria is investing in THWS as part of the Bavarian AI-network. At the Würzburg location a Center for Strong Artificial Intelligence was established and at Schweinfurt a Center for Robotics has been established.

More than 260 THWS professors conduct applied research in cooperation with regional companies, institutions and social entities. THWS emphasizes knowledge transfer in industry and society and interdisciplinary collaboration across ten faculties and 16 research institutions. Around 570 scientific, technical and administrative employees support these efforts. THWS is family-friendly and supports diverse life plans and the reconciliation of family and working life. Continuous growth, innovative teaching and pioneering research characterize THWS.

Job specification

For an initial period of five years, the scientist shall, in addition to teaching, initiate and carry out application-oriented research and development projects (up to nine weekly hours per semester, i.e., up to 50 percent of the current teaching load). The scientist shall promote networking among users, processors and tool manufacturers and implement practice-oriented projects, including in teaching. The position is permanent. Individual research and development performance is expected, with a five-year target agreement on this performance that THWS strives to extend periodically.

We are currently looking to fill the following position:

Professorship (f/m/d)
Faculty of Computer Science and Business Information Systems
W2 Professorship for AI Infrastructure
Bewerbungskennziffer: 06.1.736

Responsibilities

We are looking for a committed personality with excellent theoretical and practical experience in the field of AI infrastructure to represent the field in research and teaching. You will be responsible for establishing a nationally and internationally visible research group focusing on research- and application-related AI infrastructure issues, including:

  • Training and inference of distributed systems
  • Development of cloud-native infrastructure
  • AI operationalisation (“MLOps”)
  • Efficient data storage, management, and connection
  • Latency or resource restrictions in AI applications
  • Hardware implementations on graphics processing units

You will be part of the Center for Artificial Intelligence (CAIRO) and collaborate with other CAIRO members on interdisciplinary AI questions applicable to multiple industry sectors. You will engage in intra- and inter-faculty research projects to harness the potential of efficient AI infrastructure in areas such as generative architectures, dynamic systems or robotics. You should be willing and able to acquire third-party funds, manage research projects, and supervise junior researchers. The faculty places high importance on teaching quality in terms of both technical content and didactics, and the successful candidate should have teaching experience in AI topics and be prepared to teach fundamental undergraduate courses offered by the faculty. THWS is becoming a bilingual higher education institution, so courses are expected in both German and English; a very good command of English is a prerequisite.

Additional expectations for the professor's position:

  • Take on courses from additional study offers and related subject areas, including at other faculties, if required
  • Willingness to regularly visit international universities with strategic relations to THWS
  • Active participation in the further development of the faculty and the university
  • Commitment to internationalisation and self-administration of the university and participation in applied research projects and in technology and knowledge transfer

The position is to be filled as soon as possible and will be based in Würzburg.

Employment requirements

To be employed as a Professor at THWS, the following conditions must be fulfilled (Article 57 (3) of the Bavarian Higher Education Personnel Act, BayHSchPG):

  • An academic degree, preferably in a programme relevant to the professorship
  • Pedagogical aptitude, generally demonstrated through teaching and training experience
  • Outstanding research skills, usually proven by a doctoral degree
  • Extraordinary accomplishments in the application or development of research results and methods with at least five years of postdoctoral professional experience; three of those years must be outside academia; in exceptional cases, time spent in close cooperation with a non-academic organization can count as outside-of-academia work

The Free State of Bavaria offers ideal working conditions and state-specific salary regulations. THWS promotes work-life balance, gender equality, and supports family-friendly policies. For questions regarding equal opportunities in science and the arts, the faculty’s equal opportunities officer is available at anne.hess@thws.de. The appointment may involve part-time arrangements for 1 to 2 years to support work-life balance. Civil servant eligibility is restricted to those under 53; others become public employees under private law. The chair of the appointment committee, Professor Dr. Andreas Lehrmann (andreas.lehrmann@thws.de), can answer specialist questions.

Can you imagine becoming a professor at THWS? We look forward to receiving your application by 02 October 2025 via our online portal. Please submit: a one-page research strategy outlining how the candidate’s interests could benefit CAIRO, and a one-page teaching concept describing teaching experience and alignment with the master’s programme Artificial Intelligence and bachelor’s degree programmes offered by the faculty.
