European XFEL is an international non‑profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4km‑long X‑ray laser, which produces X‑rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

For our HED group, we are looking for a

Post‑Doc for Experiments with High Photon Energies (f/m/d)
The Position
  • Contribute to and participate in internal research projects using high photon energy X‑rays (20-30keV) at the SASE2 beamline of the European XFEL.
  • Collaborate with international research groups and user consortia.
  • Support the operation of the HED (and MID) instruments, including assisting instrument scientists during user experiments and participating in shift work.
  • Plan and conduct R&D on X‑ray diffraction methods and applications at photon energies above 20keV, with a focus on dynamic (laser‑driven shock) and/or static (diamond anvil cell) compression techniques.
  • Advise and support user groups in the preparation and execution of their experiments.
Requirements
  • PhD degree in experimental physics or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Expertise in diamond anvil cell (DAC) techniques and/or laser‑driven shock experiments, including relevant setups and diagnostics.
  • Solid knowledge of X‑ray techniques at high photon energies, particularly X‑ray diffractions (XRD) from crystalline and amorphous materials.
  • Experience with pair distribution function (PDF) analysis and the study of melt structures at high pressures is an advantage.
  • Strong motivation to work on cutting‑edge scientific projects in a highly competent and collaborative environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a multi‑lingual, multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Strong written and spoken English.
  • Structured, self‑motivated and independent working style.
