The International Business Advisory (“IBA”) team is a customer facing team that is a critical contributor to enabling EDC’s medium segment growth strategy. The team consists of a diverse set of professionals with expertise in the areas of international market intelligence, market entry, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation. Our mission is to make trade easier for our customers to help accelerate their growth into new markets.IBA’s core service is to provide customized advisory and research services specific to a company’s needs and growth aspirations. We offer these services through two practice groups: Markets and Strategy, and Regulations and Compliance.In addition, team members contribute to improving and streamlining services and collaborating with key internal or external stakeholders as required.
The IBA Team is looking for an International Business Advisor to work directly with our customers. As an Advisor, you will be exposed to some of Canada’s fastest growing companies each presenting unique growth ambitions. As such, you are responsible for creating value for our customers through 1) interpreting and understanding a customers’ international growth ambitions; 2) identifying and assessing opportunities as well as potential gaps or roadblocks; 3) scoping exercises to build out our mandate with customers; 4) engaging in research, writing and analysis; 5) synthesizing and sharing findings in a way that is clear, relevant, and actionable; 6) ensuring that customer expectations are met to the highest standards.
Reporting to the Director of the IBA team, you will need to possess experience and expertise in one or both of the following knowledge domains:
Regulations & Compliance: international tax, trade agreements, customs compliance, and product compliance. As an advisor in our Regulations and Compliance Practice Group, you are expected to be a seasoned expert in key market access considerations such as international tax, trade agreements, customs compliance, and product compliance. Moreover, you are adept at analyzing and articulating regulatory risks and opportunities that companies need to consider, based on their industry, when entering a given international market. Finally, you will be expected to navigate customers through market access issues by providing tailored information based on their level of familiarity with the subject at hand, along with clear, actionable next steps and relevant referrals to help them move forward.
Markets & Strategy: international expansion strategy, comparative markets analysis, country, industry or company intelligence, strategic customer channels research; competitive landscape overview. As an advisor in our Markets and Strategy Practice Group, you are expected to be a seasoned expert in carrying out various forms of foreign market research and sizing exercises with a view to supporting customers in assessing total addressable markets, target markets and market growth rates. Moreover, you are adept at analyzing and articulating what attributes of a foreign market make it attractive for our customers, identifying key market players and entry obstacles. Finally, you will be expected to understand your customer’s value proposition and match that against your market assessment to carefully craft a market entry roadmap that recommends key steps and partners that you will support the customer in working with, including private and public sector partners like the Canadian Trade Commissioners Service.
The ideal candidate will be an energetic, entrepreneurial, and hands‑on professional who thrives in an environment of change and is excited about the prospect of building the future of EDC’s customer value proposition. You are a clear communicator both in written expression and in public speaking, exercise sound judgement and time management skills and possess a high level of maturity interacting with and advising customers at the C‑suite level. You are client service obsessed, curious and highly adaptable, comfortable taking intelligent risk in a fast paced and dynamic environment. Most of all, you are excited about using your expertise to help our customers meet their growth aspirations.
