Job summary

A regional school district is seeking a Visual Language Interpreter to support a Deaf student in an elementary school. This role facilitates communication in a collaborative environment, interpreting between ASL and English. Candidates must have a diploma in ASL-English interpretation, be fluent in ASL, and have at least 2 years of interpreting experience. Work hours are 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday to Friday, for 10 months a year, with a pay rate of $50.00 per hour.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 completion is required.
  • Active membership in the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI).
  • Minimum 2 years of interpreting experience needed.
  • Score of 4.0 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License required.

Excludes school vacation and closure periods, school non-instructional days, and statutory holidays

Pay Rate: $50.00 per hour

Saanich Schools is seeking a dedicated and skilled Visual Language Interpreter (VLI) to support a student who is Deaf and Hard of Hearing in an elementary school setting. This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a student’s early language development journey while working in a collaborative and inclusive educational environment.

About The Role

Under the direction of the School Administrator, classroom teacher, case manager, and the Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the VLI provides advanced English/American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services. This role primarily supports a Deaf Language Acquisition Support Worker (LASW) and a student in the early stages of language development.

You will facilitate communication across a variety of educational contexts—classroom instruction, field trips, assessments, and meetings—ensuring full access to the educational environment for the student.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret classroom content and student interactions in ASL and English.
  • Collaborate with the LASW to reinforce the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Support communication in diverse settings including assemblies, field trips, and IEP meetings.
  • Prepare for interpreting by reviewing educational materials and planning for various scenarios.
  • Educate students and staff about the interpreter’s role and best practices in deaf education.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in accordance with WAVLI’s Code of Conduct.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 completion.
  • Diploma in American Sign Language-English Interpretation and Deaf Studies.
  • Minimum 2 years of interpreting experience.
