My client, a well-established insurer, is seeking a results-driven and experienced leader to join their Personal Lines underwriting team in Western Canada. This leadership role offers the opportunity to shape underwriting performance, guide a high-performing team, and influence the customer and broker experience across the region.

The successful candidate will lead a team of experienced underwriters—providing coaching, technical support, and performance oversight. This individual will work cross-functionally to support strategic objectives, streamline processes, and enhance underwriting outcomes while maintaining a strong service focus.

Title:Underwriting Team Manager – Personal Lines (Western Canada)

Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of underwriters, fostering a culture of performance, accountability, and service excellence.
  • Ensure underwriting practices align with corporate guidelines, risk appetite, and profitability targets.
  • Monitor and improve service levels to deliver a consistent and high-quality broker experience.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance workflows and streamline underwriting processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support operational improvements and national initiatives.
  • Champion change management efforts, promoting adaptability and innovation within the team.
  • Utilize data and analytics to track performance, identify trends, and support decision-making.
  • Participate in talent planning activities including recruitment, development, performance management, and compensation recommendations.
  • Provide clear and timely communication on procedural changes, underwriting direction, and team goals.
  • Support capacity planning and resource allocation by forecasting workload demands and building contingency plans.
  • Occasional travel within Canada may be required for planning meetings or team engagement sessions.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent insurance experience; CIP or working toward designation preferred.
  • 7+ years of underwriting experience in personal lines insurance (home and auto); multi-provincial experience is an asset.
  • Prior leadership or coaching experience, with a demonstrated ability to develop and inspire others.
  • Understanding of contact center/service-focused environments.
  • Commitment to delivering sound underwriting decisions while supporting excellent customer and broker service.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to collaborate across functions and levels.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities and comfort managing complex situations or escalations.
  • Ability to interpret and leverage data to inform strategy and improve performance outcomes.
  • Experience managing performance reviews, compensation input, and team development planning.
