Job Summary

The Transportation Supervisor Rover may be called to work at a local terminal or a remote location (line points) and will directly oversee customer and main line operations plans. The incumbent will manage the day-to-day operations of a 24/7 function. In addition to Transportation Supervisor duties, Rover-designated roles form part of a Go-Team deployed to locations across the network on short notice, ensuring traffic fluidity. This support could include supervisory, administrative, and other operations duties to support local operations at destination. Candidates in these roles will gain an understanding of multiple locations and territories.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safety Orientation, Understanding, Compliance and Enforcement
  • Attend Front Line Supervisor Development Programs to learn and understand the organization, rules and regulations
  • Coach and train unionized employees on safe and productive work procedures
  • Build safety compliance and improve safety results through regular safety observations; provide feedback and take action on non-compliant behavior
  • Ensure safe operation as measured by accidents and incidents and employee injuries
  • Achieve weekly and monthly safety observation objectives in the safety management plan
  • Respond to and support Trainmaster and Assistant Superintendent for crossing accidents and incidents or injury sites, coordinating with police and managing the site until restoration
  • Draft submission of accident and injury investigation close-out
  • Respond to dangerous goods incidents or leaks in a yard; liaise with the Dangerous Goods Officer to ensure well-being
  • Train, audit and enforce Standard Operating Procedures
  • Participate in investigation of accidents and incidents
Problem Solving and Decision Making
  • Attend Front Line Supervisor Development Programs to learn internal systems and procedures for solving issues and decisions
  • Maintain teamwork and order among staff, contractors, and internal clients; respond with urgency to issues
  • Use operational data to identify opportunities to improve asset utilization and service reliability; make recommendations to CN’s network implications
  • Oversee crew utilization, track deadheads and recrews, manage labor costs; improve operations and cost control with Trainmaster and Assistant Superintendent
  • Set recover plans for service exceptions with RTC, Trainmaster and Assistant Superintendent
  • Oversee timely reporting of delays and identify ways to reduce delays
Planning and Organizing Workload
  • Attend Front Line Supervisor Development Programs to understand service design and planning tools
  • Coordinate with rail traffic control to manage train lineups and meets; predict ETA and crew needs
  • Manage crew productivity against switching standards; recommend improvements
  • Monitor yard status, service commitments, inbound arrivals, and traffic to meet the service plan
  • Determine best opportunities to move traffic under multiple demands
  • Provide recommendations for cost control and asset utilization in planning and implementation
  • Monitor and adjust customer service plans
General Leadership and Supervisions of Union Workforce
  • Attend Front Line Supervisor Development Programs to understand leadership expectations and enforcement of the collective agreement
  • Communicate company goals and policies to unionized employees
  • Conduct investigations per collective agreement and issue discipline with support
  • Develop and sustain appropriate employee behaviours with feedback, recognition, reinforcement and coaching
  • Process leaves of absence and time-off requests (location-dependent)
Performance Management, Training and Onboarding
  • Evaluate employee performance and review expectations and ratings
  • Conduct onboarding conversations to ensure safe and efficient performance
  • Identify and coach performance deficiencies and take corrective action
  • Share best practices and company information to promote transparency and alignment
Working Conditions

The role has irregular hours (including nights, weekends, holidays). The incumbent will work in both office environments and outdoors in varying weather conditions. The role requires travel for company business without advance notice, including response to emergencies. The Transportation Supervisor is committed to safety while working under the collective agreement.

Requirements
Experience

Industrial work experience demonstrating progression of responsibility in a safety-compliant environment; experience with heavy machinery is an asset. Four years of supervisory experience (management or with unionized employees) and three years of railroad experience as a conductor are assets.

Note: Any of the above experiences would be considered an asset.

Education/Certification/Designation
  • High School Diploma
  • Valid Driver’s Licence
  • Certified Conductor or Locomotive Engineer (asset)
  • Degree in Business or Logistics (asset)
