Statement:

Hit the road to a rewarding casual role in Comox! We're seeking adaptable and community-focused Transit Drivers to join our team casually, playing a vital role in keeping our community connected.

Compensation, Schedule & Training
  • Schedule: This is a part-time driver position with no guaranteed hours. Shifts will be assigned based on operational needs and require strong flexibility for various shifts, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.
  • Wage Structure:
    • Full Rate (after 480 hours): $33.16 per hour.
    • Intermediate Rate (240-480 hours): $31.16 per hour (94% of full rate).
    • Introductory Rate (first 240 hours): $29.84 per hour (90% of full rate).
  • Training: Successful candidates will complete a paid training program at a rate of $25.64 per hour.
  • Union Affiliation: This position is part of the Unifor union.
Knowledge and Experience
  • A valid Class 1 or 2Q (with Air Brake endorsement) driver’s license.
  • Driver's abstract with no more than 5 demerit points and a demonstrated record of safe and responsible driving over the past 5 years.
  • Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSS) is required.
  • Preferred: At least 1 year of professional driving experience (e.g., school bus or other transport).
  • Significant skills dealing effectively with the public, including demonstrated skills in conflict resolution, problem solving, and sound decision-making in positions providing customer service.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to communicate effectively with the traveling public and to report on incidents involving safety and/or service.
  • No criminal convictions or pending charges relating directly to the Operator position.
  • Willingness to participate in a comprehensive recruitment process which consists of interviews, trainability session, medical examination (as required for licensing), drug and alcohol screening, criminal record and reference checks.

  • Possesses excellent driving skills and habits, with the ability to operate vehicles safely in all weather/road conditions.

  • Ability to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.
Key Accountabilities

Customer Transportation:

  • Safely transport passengers on assigned routes within Comox.
  • Transport customers in accordance with Municipal and Company policies, observing all traffic laws and safety rules and adhering to time schedules.
  • Courteously and professionally interact with customers.
  • Load mobility devices and escort customers to and from curbside as required.
  • Make general announcements to customers.
  • Collect correct fares and ensure valid passes are presented.
  • Manage passenger behaviour by quickly and effectively solving problems.
  • Drive safely and responsibly and be prepared for all road and traffic conditions.

Vehicle Inspection & Maintenance:

  • Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections, including checking fluid levels and general vehicle condition, to ensure the bus is in safe operating order.
  • Report any mechanical issues or vehicle deficiencies promptly.

Communication and Reporting:

  • Maintain radio contact with base and use proper communications protocol.
  • Report passenger emergencies and schedule concerns.
  • Complete various forms of paperwork, as required.
  • Assist with driver coverage by driving the transit bus.
