Compensation: $33.39 per hour – $34.39 per hour (NEE: 15). The above rates are subject to education, experience, and/or a combination of both.
Employment Status: 1 – Fulltime Term, 35 hours per week.
Overview
Malahat Nation represents approximately 350+ members with two reserve lands located on the western shore of Saanich Inlet, south of the village of Mill Bay, about 40 kilometres north of Victoria, British Columbia. In the Housing Department’s Operations & Maintenance team, we are seeking a dedicated and hard‑working Tenant Wellness Coordinator with experience working with Indigenous communities in housing‑related initiatives. Purpose
Reporting to the Housing Administrator, the Tenant Wellness Coordinator is responsible for providing direct support to tenants residing in Nation‑owned housing. Acting as a bridge between tenants and various departments, the role involves frequent interaction with the Malahat Nation community. This full‑time, 1‑year term position is based in the office with minimal local travel as required.
Responsibilities
- Under the guidance of the Housing Administrator, uphold and enforce the Housing Policy in all tasks and activities; assist and support tenants with interpretation of the Housing Policy by translating the housing policy and expectations into plain, accessible language.
- Provide professional administrative support to the Housing Administrator through proactive development and preparation of correspondence, presentations, reports/proposals, type‑forms, letters, and memos as needed.
- Provide support with applications for renovation supports for registered qualifying houses.
- Assist tenants in navigating housing‑related services, including financial responsibilities and wrap‑around supports while maintaining respectful communication between tenants and administration.
- Provide guidance or informal coaching on home‑care cleanliness, safety, and tenancy rights and responsibilities.
- Mentor the Housing Intern in general housing duties and responsibilities.
- Support assessments of housing related to renovation, health and safety inspections, and ensure units are maintained in safe, healthy conditions through education, mentorship, and advocacy.
- Coordinate, schedule, and record minutes of the Housing Committee.
- Coordinate communication, funding applications, and reporting with respect to housing from various funders including ISC, CMHC, United Way, and BC Housing.
- Build and maintain rapport, creating respectful relationships with tenants, including those who are struggling or in crisis.
- Meet tenants where they are—at home, in the community, or in the office—and walk them through their housing needs while practising patience, cultural humility, and trauma‑informed support.
- Incorporate Indigenous ways of being and knowing into everyday work, including listening deeply, walking in good relations, and promoting healing.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and respect for the impacts of colonialism and intergenerational trauma on housing outcomes; involve local elders, Knowledge Keepers, or traditional practices in tenant support, education, and conflict resolution where possible.
- Advocate on behalf of tenants when appropriate while supporting self‑advocacy; ensure tenant voices are heard and reflected in housing‑related decisions.
- Assist with planning, coordination, and facilitation of a wide range of supportive and empowering housing and tenancy programs that promote wellness, belonging, and community (e.g., Ready to Rent, Budgeting, Lifeskills).
- Maintain appropriate records management systems in accordance with Malahat Nation’s internal systems and processes and any applicable authorities (funding agencies).
- Maintain rental agreements, assist with rental payment arrangements, and manage arrears.
- Maintain respectful, accurate documentation of tenant interactions, support plans, and follow‑ups.
- Collaborate with the Operations and Maintenance Department to review, assess, and prioritize housing maintenance request forms and organize and assign related work, including coordination with contracted service companies.
- Other duties as required.
Required Education and Experience
- Grade 12 graduation (Dogwood or BC Adult Graduation Diploma) and/or an acceptable combination of related education, training and experience. Express interest in Housing Administration, Property Management, or related field.
- Minimum 1‑year experience working in Housing Administration, Property Management, or a related field.
- Criminal Record Check (CRC) including vulnerable sector.
- Valid BC Driver’s Licence and reliable vehicle.
Other Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree and/or Housing Administration, Property Management related diploma and/or certificate is an asset or a combination of experience and willingness to complete training.
- Lifeskills Coach training is preferred.
- Certified courses, training, or workshops completed in Housing Administration, Property Management or Tenancy Rights and/or Housing responsibility related courses is an asset.
- A genuine respect for Indigenous history, cultures and practices with an openness to learning and engaging with Indigenous communities is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrated commitment to community wellness and healing.
- Demonstrated ability to work with people experiencing trauma, addictions, or mental health challenges.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites programs and/or database management.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical and problem‑solving, critical thinking, coaching skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organization and time‑management skills.
- Ability to manage a deadline‑driven and detail‑oriented workload, prioritizing tasks in the context of sensitivity, confidentiality and urgency while balancing other work commitments.
- Ability to demonstrate professionalism when dealing with confidential information.
