- We have an immediate opportunity for a dedicated individual to join us as a Technology Plant Operator, reporting to the Staff Scientist Manager. You will work closely with the Operations Specialist, who will provide day-to-day guidance.
- This role is an exciting opportunity for someone with a solid understanding of mechanical systems and an openness to learn about the chemistry and production of low carbon fuels.
- This is a permanent, full-time role. You will work at our Ottawa location five days a week.
- In this role, you will be responsible for investigating fiber processing and anaerobic digestion in a small-scale pilot plant setting.
- This is not a routine plant manufacturing role. You will execute process runs, collect data and collaborate with team members to validate new procedures, troubleshoot issues, identify and implement solutions and improve processes.
Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and monitor pilot-scale equipment and systems (reactors, filtration, grinding units, etc.) to support process development and scale-up objectives
- Execute process protocols derived from lab-scale experiments, adapting them for pilot equipment and supporting the identification of critical scale-dependent behaviours
- Collaborate with scientists and process engineers to optimize experimental runs, provide feedback on equipment behaviour, and suggest improvements
- Ensure rigorous documentation of operational steps, observations, and deviations in both paper and digital logs
- Maintain cleanliness, calibration, and readiness of pilot-scale equipment, machinery or instrumentation, identifying signs of wear or malfunction
- Follow safety protocols rigorously. Understand, follow and comply with health & safety hazards in the workplace.Immediately report all incidents and hazards. Take reasonable steps to protect you and your co-worker’s health and safety

Qualifications
- Diploma, certificate or degree in a relevant field; or equivalent hands-on experience.
- 2 – 4 years plant operations experience in chemical, biochemical, or biotech industries including:
- Experience operating within R&D (research & development) or pilot-scale environments rather than full-scale production
- Proficient with troubleshooting and operating mechanical equipment
- Prior exposure to process scale-up, technology transfer, or process intensification
- Ability to identify and communicate unexpected process behavior—both verbally and in writing
- Must be able to lift 20 – 30 Kgs
- Forklift or rigging/hoist certification will be considered an asset
Skills
- Familiar with control systems (DCS or PLC-based interfaces) and instrumentation
- Ability to understand, troubleshoot and solve mechanical problems
- Competent in basic data analysis and clearly communicating findings
- Comfortable with ambiguity, iteration, and learning as part of process refinement
- Familiar with the Microsoft applications suite (Word, Excel)
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and an aptitude for critical analysis
- Ability to adapt to rapidly changing corporate focuses and industry dynamics, being flexible and efficient in the fast-paced industry environment
