This position is for a Women's Correctional Facility, where the staff and residents are all female. We will only be considering candidates of the same gender for this role, due to the nature of the position.

About Us

The Correctional Services division of the Department of Justice is responsible for the administration and operation of community and custody-based programs and services for adult offenders and young persons. Within the Correctional Services core business area there are two programs: community corrections as well as correctional facilities. Each of these program areas is broken down into closely related activities that have a specific impact on the program's target group.

About Our Opportunity

Correctional Services requires a teacher to deliver educational programming at the Central NS Correctional Facility. As a teacher, you will complete educational assessments, prepare, and deliver academic programs and assist individuals with transitioning to the community. Your curriculum knowledge will allow you to adjust to the varying needs of learners, differentiate instruction and collaborate effectively with others. We will rely on your holistic approach in working with other professionals in the case management process of individuals.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this position, you possess a valid Nova Scotia Teaching License (TC 5 or ITC) in addition to experience working with at‑risk populations. Experience teaching core subject areas, and familiarity with CAEC, NSSAL, and Nova Scotia Community College is essential.

You also demonstrate the ability to engage and communicate ideas and information to learners, some of whom have learning difficulties or are not highly motivated. Your knowledge of assessment, differentiated instruction, and classroom management are also strengths of yours. You function successfully as a member of a team, but you also work well in an independent and self‑directed manner. Your initiative and motivation are important qualities, as is the ability to stay organized.

Experience in working in a correctional setting, transition planning and awareness of community employment supports would be considered an asset.

Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
