Duties And Responsibilities

The Systems Administrator reports to the Senior Systems Administrator and, with guidance from the Manager, Enterprise Systems, Information Technology Services (ITS), is responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of computer systems that provide services to students, faculty, and staff. The operating environment includes servers, operating systems, system patches, authentication and authorization, backup, and network connectivity used by enterprise applications and services provided to the University community. Proficiency in Windows or Linux/Unix technologies across physical and virtual platforms is required. The incumbent must be highly motivated with a strong focus on customer service.

Responsibilities include design, development, maintenance, security, troubleshooting, resource monitoring, repair, upgrades and installation of IT systems, as well as support and participation on longer-term projects. The incumbent must be able to perform multiple tasks, respond quickly to system failures, and coordinate the work of team members involved in deployment or restoration of enterprise systems. Where specified, the incumbent will be responsible for Ancillary Systems administration and must demonstrate administrative and technical proficiency with CBORD systems in support of University campus card operations and related interfaces.

Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of general programming methodology and techniques (including system implementation languages and operating system services).
  • Communication skills are vital as Systems Administration often requires direct contact with Vendors, Faculty, Staff, Students and other technical support individuals; the incumbent must tailor communication to the recipient’s level of knowledge.
  • Integrity is paramount as a Systems Administrator has computer access privileges that exceed those available to other individuals. It is imperative that these privileges be used ethically to protect the rights, privacy and intellectual property of the University.
  • The incumbent must be able to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals or technical procedures.
  • Possessing excellent written and oral communication skills, the incumbent will write reports and procedure manuals and effectively present information and respond to questions from faculty, staff, students, managers, clients and other IT professionals.
  • Technical skills appropriate to the assigned area within Operations & Infrastructure include:
  • Operating Systems support in a network environment, including VLANs, network interface configuration, and various internet protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, DNS, HTTPS, SMTP, NTP)
  • File systems configuration and management including NTFS, Fat32, Ext4, NFS, and remotely supplied NAS/SAN file systems
  • Networked directory services, security and administration including Active Directory, LDAP or Unix Directory services
  • Microsoft Clients and Servers or Solaris, Linux Servers and Desktops (including security features and administration)
  • Configuration and support for virtualization technologies, in particular VMware or HyperV
  • Administer and implement systems security with knowledge of firewall rules, file permissions, user groups, account administration, and package management
  • OS scripting and programming tools (Microsoft batch file, Visual Basic, Windows PowerShell, Windows Script Host, PERL, HTML, Unix/Linux scripting, etc.)
  • OS system configuration management and automation tools; email architecture, messaging systems and processing
  • Web service platform (Apache, Tomcat, IIS) administration and SSL/TLS encryption
  • Database management (Oracle, MSSQL, MySQL, Maria), access controls, SQL scripting and development / utilization of custom utility programs

Education And Experience

  • Honours degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Seven years’ experience in Systems Administration
